Schwarz, a very able Jewish writer, for Young Jud- aea, the important movement of Jewish youth which functions as the junior branch of the Zion- ist movement in America, the meaning and importance of the Bible is described as follows: If one thinks of the Bible in terms of a book as we know it today—a book of fiction, a book of history, etc.—that person has an erroneous idea of what the Bible actually is. The Bible is not a book; it is not only a collection of stories or of law or of religious writings. The Bible is a collection of books and works, written during many centuries of Israel's history, which were finally placed to- gether and edited by the scribes for study and edification. Some books which were not admitted into the collection — such as the book of Maccabees and Wisdom of Ben Sira—are known as apocryphal writings (hidden writings). In the Talmud there is a discussion as to which books are divinely inspired. Glance into a Hebrew Bible or into the translation of the Jew- ish Publication Society and you will find the collection is divid- ed into three sections, viz.
