"There must be self-imposed

his readiness tc meet some of the
executive members of the Jewish

Wise may not know it, but the
reason why the New York pr
paid so little attention to his pas-
sionate Passover address at the Se-

news editbrs were annoyed by his
statement that the British Empire
is "a matter of the past" . .
We hear that the American Emer-
gency Committee for Zionist Affairs
is gcing to have an executive of five

the friction prevailing within the

committee is questioned in some
American Zionist circles . .
It is pointed out that of the five,

three rarely attend the meetings
. . .—These are Rabbi Wise, Robert

Szold, and Judge Levinthal .
The other two of the newly created
executive are Ben-Gurion and Dr.
Nahum Goldmann . . .—A report
which just reached New York re-
veals that when Moshe Shertok
came to see Lytteltcn in Egypt re-
garding the question of Palestine,
Churchill's personal envoy, who has
since become a member of the
British Cabinet, advised the repre-
sentative of the Jewish Agency to
tell the Jews that it really does not
pay for them to bother about such
a small country like Palestine ..
We shall not quote Shertok's reply
to this "advice" here, even though
the reply was given in a very polite
form . .

TALK OF THE TOWN: The "Case
Against the Jew" article which ap-
peared in the Saturday Evening
Post, is still the talk of the town in
New York . . .—This is because
of the revelation that Wendell Will-
kie, who has been asked to write
articles for every magazine in the
country, was turned down by the
Saturday Evening Post when he
offered to write a reply to the con-
troversial article . . .—This is the
first time that any publication ever
rejected an article by Winkle .
It turns cut that Milton Mayer,
the author of the "Case Against
the Jew," peddled this article from
magazine to magazine before the
Saturday Evening Post bought it
. . .—The Readers Digest was the
first publication to reject this article
. . .—A bitter feud is ?reported be-
tween Milton Mayer and his broth-
er, Howard . . .—Because of his

ish photographer who took the syn-
agogue pictures used to ilustrate
the Mayer article, says that had

he known how his photos were to
be used, he would not have taken
them . . .—He was paid $150 for
the photographs ..

PEOPLE 'AND THINGS: Our best
wishes to Morris Weinberg on the
occasion of his becoming the pub-
lisher of The Day, the naticnal
Yiddish daily newspaper published
in New York . . .—Weinberg was
one of the publishers of The Day
when the paper was established 28
years ago . . .—He stepped out of
the enterprise a number of years
ago, only to take it over again now.
S. B. Ectnaiko, the Zionist lead-
er in Chicago, who, as a hobby,
writes Jewish short stories, is very
proud of his two sons .. .—One of
them, William, is a navigation ob-
server in the Canadian Air Force,
while the other, Charles, is in ac-
tive training with the Marine Corps
"somewhere in the United States".
Herman Hoffman, grand master
of the Independent Order Brith
Abraham, who filed a complaint
against "Social Justice," asking for
the suppression of this anti-Semi-
tic sheet, received a reply from the
Attorney General's office that this
request is being given "most care-
ful consideration" . . .—Since Mr.
Herman made his demand for the
closing of Father Coughlin's mouth-
piece, he has received a number of
threatening letters which he plans
to turn over to the Departmeint of
Justice.
