INCREASED DEMANDS MADE UPON DETROIT JEWS FOR
SUPPORT OF ALLIED JEWISH CAMPAIGN AGENCIES

ANALYSIS OF DRIVE'S CAUSES SHOWS

INCREASED NEED FOR RELIEF EFFORTS

An analyst's of appeals for support of local. national and overseas
eausea made to the budget committees of the Jewish Welfare Federation
and the Detroit Service Group, acting in behalf of the 7942 Allied
Jewish Campaign. reveals that after reductions of original. requests,
*approximately $1,000.000 would have to he raised if all recognized

needs are to be properly cared for.

The requests totaling this large sum are to be acted upon by the
executive committee of the Jewish Welfare Federation, under the
chairmanship of Fred M. Blitzel, who was chosen chairman of the

1942 Allied Jewish Campaign.

Last year, Detroit Jews rained • total of $835,000 towards a
campaign quota of 1940,000. The increased demands for relief
and reconstruction work and local and national obligations
points to an Increased quota for the campaign, as indicated by
the requests for an aggregate sum far In excess of a million
dollars.

The major item in the drive is the United Jewish Appeal--
Including the American Jewish Joint Distribution Committee, the United
Palestine Appeal and the National Refugee Service—which last year
received $420,000 fromtheA 'lied Jewish Campaign. The pressing need
for the saving of tens of thousands of refugees who can be taken to
South America. Palestine and other ports. the need for protecting

viding for tens of thousands of refugees in many parts of the world.
emphasize the signifance of this major fund which calls for liberal

The World Over:

The first signs of success in the current Allied Jewish Campaign
were evident In the reports submitted by workers in the Women's
Division. The initial response showed a 15 per cent increase over
last year's pledges, and while this does not indicate a general similar
oversubscription of last year's gifts, it encourages leaders to believe
that the trend will be followed by many contributors.

Referring to a statement issued
last week in the name of a dissi-
dent minority, Dr. Wise declared
that they acted contrary to the
overwhelming sentiment of the
Jews of America. Among the mes-
sages received by the American
Emergency Committee for Zionist
Affairs is the following from Dr.
James G. Heller, president of the
Central Conference of American
Rabbis, which has a membership of
450 reform rabbis:
"The only expression of opinion
of the American Reform Rabbin-
ate on the subject of a Palestine
Jewish fighting force, which can
be authoritative, is that the Cen-
tral
Conference
of American
Rabbis which, on February 27 laid,.
adopted a resolution favoring -the
establishment of such a force to be
ecruited in Palestine and to,..in-
tlude in its ranks stateless Jewish
I efugees. Such
an army would
f ght for democracy in its own
name and under its own flag under
the leadership of Great Britain and
Che United Nations.
"I feel certain that it was the
verwhelming sentiment of those
ho voted for this resolution that
it is both just and wise to permit
the Jews in Palestine to exercise
their right to fight in their home-
land as a people. I am further con-
vinced that there is little difference
or opinion among American Jews
a.I to the wisdom of permitting the
formation of a Jewish fighting
force _ in Palestine similar to the
Free Czechs, Free Poles and other
similar contingents now fighting in
the . cause of the United Nations.
The proposal has but one aim:. To
enable the Jews of Palestine to
help the sacred cause of world
democracy in the most effective
Manner possible."
