he would be able to send his
brother.

mense tragedies.

lieb, is Chief Surgeon of the Bucha-

THE HAMMER AND SICKLE
IN HARVARD CLUB
Among the wonders wrought by
the war is the appearance of the
flag with the hammer and sickle
on the walls of the staid Harvard
Club in New York.
With Russia among the United
Nations, and as our ally in this
war, men of vision recognize that
one does not break up a united
front by being unwisely blind to
the needs of the hour.
If you are not frightened by the
awe that goes with visiting the ex-
clusive Harvardites, and if you are,
in New York. take a look at the'
hammer and sickle flag in that]
club. It will inspire you to order ai
cocktail in that attractive build-1
ing whose members include some
of the most important men in
America.
THE CIVILIAN DEFENDERS
Only a person who comes from
what is still a comparatively in-
different community—count your
commentator as such a person-
w-ill notice the difference between
civilian defense activities in New
York and New Jersey and other
states on the Eastern Coast (the
same situation must exist on the
West Coast), as compared with
communities like Chicago and De-
troit and Grand Rapids.
Just spend a few hours in a coast
city and you will become aware of
unparalleled activities. People are
active. They are fire wardens and
air wardens. Women are busy on
all fronts. You realize at once that
there is a war in which we are
actively engaged. Unfortunately—
and that's America's problem—too
many people in areas far away
from danger zones do not realize
the threat to America. But they
will, and then the guns will begin
popping.
But—here is the crux of the prob-
lem. The people in the East are so
busy that some organizations are
becoming worried. The air wardens
and the Red Cross workers and the
fire chiefs are so busy that they
are not devoting as much time as
they are expected to to Jewish
movements.
Well, if the Middle West has a
lesson to learn from the East about
civilian defense work, the East has
a lesson to learn from us Mid-West-
erners. Our women, too, have done
and are doing a great job for the
Red Cross. Ithas been the main
activity. But—they have not shirk-
ed responsibility for Jewish causes.
