of the powers of suggestion,
which as in everything else, may
be used to propagate evil or good.
As is the case with many pro-

avidly following, there is too
great an emphasis on the wrong
rather than the right to create a
heroic outlook.

to take a look at a baseball posi-

made the grade—that of catcher.
As a matter of fact, there is a
decided shortage of good back-
stops in the game now, the most
outstanding being Brooklny's Roy
Campanella and the Yankees'
Larry Berra.
Still, Jewish players have im-
pressed behind the bat, the tough-
est position on
the playing field.'

have a long and fruitful career
in the national game.

THE FEW JEWS who were
catchers in the big leagues had
successful careers. The most spec-
tacular Jewish backstop of all,
however, was Johnny Kling,
(real name was Kline) of the
Chicago Cubs. Kling joined the
Bruins in 1900.
The sports scribes of the day
hailed him as the best player on a
team that boasted such stellar
performers as the famous Tinker-
Evers-Chance, double play com-
bination, and' pitcher 3-finger
Brown.
Kling won the distinction of
being named as one of the best
five catchers' in baseball. The
group included Roger Bresnahan,
Gabby Harnett, Black Mike
Cochrane and Bill Dickey.
Kling drew endless praise
when he didn't allow the Tigers'
base stealing ace, Ty Cobb, to
snitch a sack during a world ser-
ies. In the 1906 series, when
batting .300 was a near miracle,
Kling batted .312, and was de-
scribed as the "matchless Kling."

"A JEW IN TIIE Polo Grounds"
was always the fond dream of
New York Giant manager John
McGraw—he felt that a Jewish
player would draw the vast Jew-
ish population of New York. But
McGraw was never satisfied in
this desire.
Only when Bill Terry ran the
team did a Jew star behind the
bat. That was Harry Danning, the
best Jewish player ever to wear
a Giant uniform and one of the
best catchers of his time His

steady receiving and dangerous
hitting won many a game from
the boys on Coogan's Bluff.
Actually, Danning's best years
were his last four as a Giant—
but these won't be easily forgot-
ten. During this time, he never
dropped below the .300 mark.
Danning was dubbed "the
horse" by Sportscaster Ted Hus-
ing after reading a Damon Run-
yon story concerning such a
character. Danning's nickname
might have been a joke but their
was nothing funny about his abil-
ity.
