UN Falls Down on Job of Protecting Human Rights

By NATHAN Z1PRIN

HE RECORD of the UN as a protector of human
rights is deeply disappointing. The declaration of
human rights remains a scrap of paper. And the geno-
cide resolution remains academic.
The freedom of the press, instead of
being strengthened by the UN, is in
jeopardy if the UN continues to pro-
ceed along the lines it has been fol-
lowing.
The International Court of Justice
has ruled that Colombia and the asy-
lum it has given the last two and a
half years to Raoul Haya de la Torre,
famous Peruvian rebel leader.
This action will arouse dismay not
only in Latin America. It will not en-
Ziprin
hance the prestige of the International
Court. It represents an additional blow against the UN.
Israel is being knocked around by the UN. It may

T

yet regret that it ever joined it instead of staying out.

BEN GURION'S statement that the government of
Israel is providing religious education was quite a sur-
prise to many Americans accustomed the the idea of
separation of church and state.
Theodor Herzl proclaimed the principle that "re-
ligion is a private affair:" Ilerzl, they say, was closer
to the American concept than Ben Gu•ion.

THE NEAR EAST and North Africa will receive
about a billion dollars of American military and
economic aid, the Christian Science Monitor reports
from Washington.
According to the Monitor: "Israel and the Arab
states are each to get 25 millions in economic help plus
50 millions for refugee resettlement.
About 40 millions in military aid will go to Ethiopia,
Israel and the Arab states to bolster their internal
security on assurances it will not be used against other

Osnos, president of the Jewish
Hospital Association, has an-

Dr. Priver who will come to
Detroit early this fall to assume
the directorship of the Sinai Ilos-
pital, as Detroit's Jewish hospi-

Medical Collecting Company of
the Sixth Infantry Division and
upon his separation from the
army, became a resident in hos-

executive secretary of the Jewish

Near East or North African countries."

THE UNIVERSITY of Lima, oldest university in
Latin America, is about to celebrate its 400th anniver-
sary. When Dr. Maurice Perizweig, the executive head
of the World Jewish Congress, recently visited Lima
he was asked by the university to prevail upon Prof.
Einstein to participate in the celebration.
Einstein could not subject himself to the strains of
a journey, but thanks Dr. Perlzweig, his voice will be
heard. This message will be delivered through a record.

SOVIET RUSSIA is boasting of having invented ev-
erything. The other day Molotov told Stalin that Adam
and Eve were Russians. Stalin asked sternly: Have you
any 'evidence?
"Indeed," replied Molotov, "there is irrefutable evi-
dence. Adam and Eve had no clothes, they had au) roof
over their heads and they had nothing to cat except
apples. Still they felt they were in paradise. They must
have been Russians."
