Several weeks ago, Reps. John

Martin Jr. introduced a bill to
authorize the appropriation of up
to $150,000,000 for grants to Is-
rael. A like bi-partisan measure
had been introduced in the Sen-
ate.
In their declaration, the sign-
ers said that the United States
should extend aid to Israel now
"in order to assist it in absorb-
ing its large influx of immigra-
tion and in developing its re-
sou•ces and industries, so that
Israel may become a military,
economic and idological bastion
for the free world in the Middle
East."

Council was losing ground and
that for lack of anything else to
do it was attacking the Israel

American Jewish Committee as a
Zionist outfit.

for 24 hours:
2. Resumption of work on
Jewish-owned land, and
3. Stoppage pending negotia-
tions on Arab-owned property.

This formula, Sharett stated,
was discussed with Riley and met
with no objection. ''We were
convinced," he said, "that our de-
cision was consistent with his
views. If the chief of staff now
states that a misunderstanding
has arisen, we are prepared to
clear it up."
At the same time, Sharett
voiced satisfaction with two other
points of Riley's report to the se-
curity Council, asserting it up-
held Israel's interpretation that
suspension of the drainage work
was only temporary and that the
issue was between Israel and the
chairman of the Armistice Com-
mission and not between Israel
and Syria.
