What's the Score?

By LARRY ALTMAN

OOKOUT FOR the White Sox!
After years of yearning, Chi-
sox fans now have a team that
will prove troublesome for Amer-
ican League rivals.
In obtaining Saul Rogovin from
Detroit, manager
Paul Richards,,,
has finally got-
ten a hurler he
has coveted since
his days at Buf-
falo.
Rogovin w as
Richards' best
pitcher at Buf-
falo — The Chi-
sox whip feels
that Rog can do
it again. Altman
Rogovin is getting a break in
moving to the Windy City.
He will be under a manager
who made him a winning pitcher
once before. We think Richards
will do it again.
Without doubt, the White Sox
are asserting themselves as a
coming baseball power. Their
rookie crop is among the best in
baseball.
As soon as the Pale Hose kids
get some experience under their
belts, White Sox fans may well
see the cherished American
League bunting floating from
familiar Comiskey Park ... Paul
Richards seems an early choice
for manager of the year. '

ABRAMS AFIRE
The Brooklyn Dodgers are in
first place. Though their pitching
has not been good, the hitters arc
having a field day—one in partic-
ular.
Leadoff man Cal Abrams is
now busting the pellet at a better
than .400 clip. The Jewish out-
fielder has more than solved the
Dodgers' leadoff and leftfield
problems.

At this rate, only a miracle can
help Gene Herman.ski regain his
old slot. As a matter of fact, all
evidence points to an early de-
parture from Brooklyn for Her-
manski.
Eveh when Abrams was in-
jured, the leftfield job was shared
by Tom Brown and Rookie Don
Thompson.
With Abrams back in Way, the
Dodgers have apparently decided
that Brown and Thompson will
suffice for utility roles.
The logical answer is that Her-
manski will be sold or traded.
Look for the Polish outfielder
to wind up with the St. Louis
Cards or New York:Giants—if the
Brooks -can get a pitcher in re-
turn.

JEWISH EXEC?
The DeWitt boys, who own the
St. Louis Browns, have sold a
$700,000 note to a group of St.
Louis brokers headed by Mark C.
Steinberg.
Although the DeWitts still own
the club, it seems only a matter of
time until the oft-sold Brownies
have new owners.
Whether or not the club will
leave St. Louis is as yet unknown
—but *ith the group headed by
Steinberg showing definite in-
terest, St. Louis fans still may
have the opportunity to root for
two teams.
