Detroiter Recalls Service Days With Ben Gurion

There is at least one Jew in Detroit whose ac-
quaintance with David Ben Gurion, prime minister of
Israel, goes back to the year 1916: he is Norman Cottler,
owner of the Dexter-Davison Markets.
In that year Ben Gurion came to Detroit to recruit
volunteers for the newly formed Jewish Legion which,
under the command of Gen. Allenby, was to liberate
Palestine from the Turkish regime and to restore the
country to the Jews as "a national home," as it was
later expressed in the Balfour Declaration.
In a special interview with the Jewish Chron-
icle, Cottler recalled that he enlisted in the Legion
in 1917 and was then sent to England for basic
training His outfit, the 39th and 40th Battalions,
left three months later for Egypt and from there
proceeded to Palestine.

Ben Gurion was a private in the same outfit in
which Cottler served. They shared the same tent
for many months. Another soldier who shared the tent
was Pvt. Gershon Agronsky who later rose to fame in
the Zionist movement. A third man remembered by
Cottler was Pvt. Axrunin, a former Detroit attorney,
whose son is now a major in the Israeli army and was
mentioned by Ben Gurion in his speech at Monday
night's banquet. Another Detroiter who served in the
same outfit was Nathan Linden, a real estate operator,
who alse is one of the leaders in the Histadrut drive.
Ben Gurion, Cottler said, was one of the best liked
men in the whole outfit. He was always interested in
the welfare of the individual soldier and constantly
thought up way s of improving conditions. His great

knowledge and initiative, Cottler stated, made him a
confidant of his superiors.
"A ball of fire," that's the way Cottler summed
up Ben Gurion's personality.
Did he make Zionist propaganda, we asked Cottler.
He did not have to, he replied, for the whole outfit con-
sisted of idealists who had joined the brigade, only for
the reason to help regain Palestine for the Jewish people.
His friendship with Ben Gurion, Cottler confided, is
one of his fondest remembrances. Even at that time,
when Ben Gurion was still relatively unknown, it
could be seen that he would go places and that he was
a born leader.
Neither Ben Gurion nor Cottler saw combat service.
Cottler had an attack of malaria fever in the final
stages of the war. —G N.
