DETROIT JEWISH CHRONICLE

Iconic to Detroit!
Dr. Weizmann's
Premier Message to Israel
City Hall
"On this anniversary of our independence, let
us offer a blessing for the miracle that happened
to our nation three years ago with the creation of
the state of Israel.
"This period opened with a fierce and bitter
struggle for the liberation of our homeland.
Throughout these three years there has been an
unceasing process of creative endeavor to consoli-
date the state, and to create the conditions for re-
ceiving and integrating the returning exiles. The
generation-old yearning of Israel for the return to
Zion, to build and to be rebuilt, is finding fulfill-
ment.
"This is a great day for us. On this day we
can look back on a record of achievements un-
equaled in the history of our people. We have
doubled our population. And in the spheres, of
agricultural settlement and industry, education and
science, housing and labor, we have made great
strides and are ever on the advance.
"The Israel defense army, faithful to its glori-
ous tradition in the War of Liberation, carried out
a short while ago a great humanitarian mission by
rendering aid to the Maabarot. We have not yet
attained the longed for peace with our neighbors.
But we still stretch forth to them the hand of peace
—without relaxing our military preparedness.
"Our task is not yet completed, nor has our
final objective been attained. We are witness to
the termination of one of the most ancient exiles
in ere history of our people—the Babylonian exile.
But many exiles still await the redemption of Ali-
yah. We must receive and absorb them. Willingly
and with love did we undertake this heavy burden
of responsibility and hardship. And we shall fulfill
this mission. Nor have we stood alone. The faith-
ful hand of brotherhood was extended to us by the
Jewish communities abroad, particularly the illus-
trious Jewish community of the United States which
is now rising to new heights in its endeavor to aid
in the reconstruction of our people and our state.
"We approach our fourth year of independence
fully conscious of the urgency and magnitude of the
task ahead. We shall double and treble our efforts
to fulfill our great purpose. Not for a moment
will we lose sight of our basic principle: we shall
always recognize that the establishment of the
state is not an end in itself; its supreme and sublime
purpose is to serve as a home for every Jew who
either from an inner urge or from the stress of an
external circumstance returns to take root in his
homeland.
"And these who come, let them extend their
help to the development of this great Jewish
culture without which we would not have gained
our achievements,
"We are confident of our ability to carry out
the great and historic responsibility which has been
laid upon us by destiny. For we possess the deep
faith in this great deed that we are performing
here. We shall ever hold on high the banner of
our deliverance,
"On this day of celebration, I send my sincere
greetings to all the citizens of the state, and to the
entire Beth Israel.
"I send a special greeting to the newly arrived
immigrants, to our soldiers who stand on guard
night and day, to our sailors and our airmen and
to representatives of the state wherever they may
be.
"May your endeavors be blessed."
