`Border Street' — Unforgettable
Picture of Warsaw. Ghetto

The Poles of late, have been
carrying the ball for the Iron
Curtain countries in the realm
of motion pictures and have
been doing a good job to judge
by the samples that come to
Detroit.
Currently playing at the Cin-
ema is the film "Border Street,"
as fine a foreign film as has
been seen here in recent months.
It is the story of the destruc-
tion of the Warsaw Ghetto as
experienced by a group of chil-
dren from the same neighbor-
hood.
Featured in the movie are just
as talented a group of young-
sters as can be found anywhere.
Reflecting the prejudice of their
parents, they condense for the
viewer all the attitudes and
tensions that the Nazi invasion
of Poland gave vent to.
Both Jews and Gentiles ap-
pear as representative types.
We see the Jewish assimilation-
ists as well as traditionalists;
Polish Nazis; patriots who har-
bor anti-Semitic sentiments; and
sincere workers for a common
front against the Nazis.

The religious Jews of Detroit showed their unity and their strength last Monday night at a din-
ner in honor of Moshe Shapira, Israeli minister of health and education, when they pledged more
than $400,000 in bonds at the opening of their part of the campaign.
Shapira, in his speech, stressed
the fact that Israeli bonds are a
secure investment and empha-
sized that the Israeli army is now
stronger than ever in its history.
It another war with the Arab
countries should come, he said, it
would not be fought on Israeli
territory but would be carried
right into the enemy's homeland.
Shapira, who is one of the
signers of the Israel Declara-
tion of Independence, recalled
in his speech the days and dis-
cussions preceding that momen-
tous decision, and he said that
the decision was finally taken,
despite all the obvious risks

The plot involves the fate of
a group of children, one of
whom is a Jewish girl, but is
unaware of the fact. Their in-
dividual struggles against the
Germans and the necessity to
somehow survive, proves terri-
fying and pathetic.
The picture of the little Jew-
ish boy, D a v i d, returning

forgotten.
