one of the first members of the
National Council for Jewish
Education.
The development of the UHS
in Detroit is, in substance, the
result of Isaacs' tireless efforts
to imbue the Jewish community
with the idea of Jewish educa-
tion.
The first UHS unit was the
Wilkins street Talmud Tora with
an enrollment of G25 pupils in
April, 1919. In 1923, the Kirby
Center was opened with an at-
tendance of 800 pupils. Other
units followed rapidly. In 1926,
the UHS became a constituent
agency of the Jewish Welfare
Federation.
