LAKE SUCCESS—(Special)

NEW YORK— (WNS) —A

statement clarifying the rela-
tionship between the United
Jewish Appeal and the forth-
coming Israel bond drive in
the United States was issued
by Abba Eban, Israel's am-
bassador to the United States.

Taking note of the prevailing
"confusion" with regard to the
relationship between the two
campaigns, Eban stressed that it
was "not the purpose of the bond
issue to divert gift dollars to the
bond issue, but to create re-
sources above and beyond gift
money," and that "it must be
made clear that any purchase of
Israel bonds at the expense of a
contribution to the United Jewish
Appeal is not a service to Israel."
He asserted that the free dol-
lars supplied by the United Jew-
ish Appeal were needed to meet

Israeli-Syrian dispute.

Maj. Gen. William E. Riley,
chief of staff of the UN truce

Near East, told the Council that
supervisory authority rested with

Two big warships of the Israeli navy, the Misgav (top) and the Hagana, are on their way to
the United States and are due to arrive in New York on Tuesday. They will visit more than a
dozen cities on the east coast in connection with the $500,000,000 Israeli bond issue. Both ships are
veterans of Israel's war of independence. The IIa gana is famous for its role in bringing "illegal"
immigrants to Israel during the time of the Brit ish mandate. Crew members will be flown to vari-
ous cities, including Detroit, where they will be guests of the local committees for the bond drive.

Golda Myerson to Speak
Cabinet Illegal,
on Israel's Anniversary
Suit Alleges

JERUSALEM— (WNS)—In an
unprecedented move, two mem-
bers of parliament this week
petitioned the Israeli Supreme
Court to rule on the legality of
the Israel cabinet.
This action was brought by
Hillel-Kook Bergson and Eri Ja-
botinsky, two Head members of
parliament who recently broke
away from the party and asked
to be recognized by the Knesset
. as a separate faction.
• Specifically, their petition re-
quested the court to rule the
cabinet illegal and to direct
President Weizman(' to declare
the body unlawful.
Their petition is based on the
contention that President Weiz-
mann lacked the authority to
designate the members - of the
present cabinet as a caretaker
government until the national
elections.
. Should the court decide that a
real legal issue has been raised,
it will issue a write and permit
argument on the motion. Mean-
while the Supreme Court is
studying the application for the
Writ.

Bible Passage Clue to Bandits' Hideout

HAIFA — (WNS) — Biblical contribution to
man's progress has been great and varied, but
never before was Holy Scripture deemed a key
to crime detection until that facet of the Bible was
demonstrated by a Haifa policeman.
A band of Arab smugglers operating from
across the Jordan River wended its way into Israel
under the cover of night. When the infiltrees real-
ized that the guards of Israel neither sleep nor
slumber, they tried to make a hasty retreat.
But their contraband-laden caravan of asses
was moving too slowly and the smugglers deserted
their caravan and ran for hiding.

Policemen seized the caravan and its cargo.
The Israel border guard began bending all its
efforts toward locating the smuggler's hiding place
and apprehending the culprits.
One day the unnamed Haifa policeman sat
reading the Bible. Thumbing the pages, he came
across the passage in Isaiah which read: "The ox
knoweth his owner, and the ass his master's crib."
With this clue, he advised his fellow-policemen
to hold the asses several days without food and
then permit them to wander off. Sure enough the
starved beasts led the police to the den where
the marauding Arabs were hiding.

Council rule on the "troublesome

dispute could be settled by the
Mixed Armistice Commission.
Eban stated t f iat Israel

added, however, that Israel now
considers that the bombing
"may not be in ci nformity"
with the armistice ag r cement.
No apologies for thi killing of
Jews have been mad( by Syria,
he remarked.
Eban said that it never oc-
curred "to any respo nsible per-
son" during the Pale: tine parti-
tion talks to deny Israel the

in the marshes whose drainage is
disputed.
