Kasle "Give more to keep up the level of work," Kasle urged. "Give still more to meet the increased need." Opening his message, Kasle extended best wishes for the Passover holiday to all members of the Jewish community. "It is fitting," he said, "that we modern descendants of the Jews who made the difficult journey through the desert to the Promised Land should observe Passover now by dedicating our- selves to the campaign — a great project which brings our breth- ern from Europe and the Moslem countries to Israel, the land no longer promised but at last secured." Kasle reminded contributors of the wide scope of the campaign, stressing that it is the one com- munity philanthropic drive that provides for all the causes—here in Detroit, nationally and over- seas — that are important "to the general welfare of the -Jewish people." "One gift," Kasle emphasized, "If it is a good gift, provides for a world of work. Remember how many causes you are sup- porting with your one gift and make it large enough to ex- press your interest in all of them." Thanking contributors and workers for the good results to date, Kasle concluded, "let's keep up the pace, so that the end of the campaign may be as good as Its beginning." Friday, April 20, 1951 Israeli Paper Tells Facts of Biro Bidjait GREET,No TEL AVIV—(WNS)—The He- brew newspaper "Haaretz" re- cently carried a series of stun- ning reports about Jewish life in Biro Bidjan. According to the report, the so-called Jewish autonomous re- gion in Biro Bidjan has a popula- tion of 140,000 people, 30 per cent of which is Jewish. During 1949-50 there was a wave of liquidations among com- munists, especially Jewish com- munists. Among the victims was S. Kushnir, secretary of the Com- munist Party in Biro Bidjan; Bachmatsky, former party secret- ary; Goldmacher, the region's representative at the Supreme Soviet Council; Silberstein, head of the Biro Bidjan Soviet; Wat- tenberg, secretary of the Biro Bidjan Committee in America before he sailed to Russia; Leah Lishnianskia, a member of the Supreme Council, and a number of other leading Jewish commun- ists. All had been accused of "Jew- ish nationalism" and "cosmopoli- tanism." At the same time it was re- ported that the editor of the Biro Bidjan Yiddish paper "Der Shtern," had been arrested and that the publication, the only Yiddish paper in Soviet Russia, had been closed down. Key positions formerly held by Jews have been turned over to Russians. • More than 50,000 Jews, serving with the American armed forces at home and abroad, will observe Passover with all the trimmings as a result of world-wide arrangements com- pleted months ago by the National Jewish Welfare Board. Seders like those shown in these photos will be held from Korea to Alaska, from Panama to Germany and at all military installations and veterans' hospitals in continental United States.
