DETROIT JEWISH CHRONICLE

Congregation Beth Moses
' ate New Synagogue
to Dedtc

Forty-nine years ago, five indi-
viduals met at the home of the
late Mr. H. Silver on Gratiot ave-
nue, and founded a congregation
named Beth Moses Anshe Rom-
ania.
For three years, services were
held in that home. By 1905, the
congregation had grown larger
and strong enough to purchase
a cottage on Adelaide Street.
The financial needs of the con-
gregation were met by member-
ship dues amounting to 10 cents
per member.
After eleven years, the con-
gregation could afford the pur-
chase of a home which was con-
verted into a synagogue. This
place of worship, which was
located on Hendrie street, was
used until 1926.
In that year, the congregation
reached a decision to build its
Own synagogue structure on
Owen avenue which became
known in all Detroit as the
Shul."
It was considered one of the
major synagogues in the city and
well known for its inainfold rel-
igious activities.
However, in the years follow-
ing, intra-urban migration caused
a substantial change in the neigh-
boring population, and necessitat-
ed, in 1940, the sale of that house
of worship.
The congregation then moved
Into a double store on Linwood
and Blaine, with the intention of
Using those quarters for a short
period.
The subsequent outbreak of the
war and shortages of building
materials following it, compelled
the congregation to postpone
their building plans for a decade.
Last year ground was finally
broken for a modern synagogue
building on Linwood avenue at

Oakman Court, which will be
dedicated at 2 p.m., Sunday.

Thus, a new chapter in the
history of Congregation Beth
Moses is to be opened. Its evolu-
tion from humble quarters in a
private home to a spacious mod-
