UJ A—KEYSTONE OF FREEDOM FOR ISRAEL AND THE HOMELESS

YOUNGSTOWN, O.—(WNS)-
Denial of unemployment compen-
sation to an orthodox Jewish em-
ployee who refused to accept a
position that required her to work
on the Sabbath was "an uncon-
stitutional abridgement of relig-
ious freedom," the Jewish Com-
munity Council.and the American
Jewish Congress argued before
the Ohio State Court of Appeals
in an appeal from the decision
of the board of review of unem-
ployment compensation,
Complainant in the case is Mary
Jane Heisler, who was denied un-
employment compensation 0 n
Nov. 13, 1948, after she refused
to investigate potential employ-
ment at St. Elizabeth Hospital of
Youngstown, when told that the
job would require working on the
Sabbath.
Attorneys for the plaintiff are
Leo Pfeffer of the American Jew-
ish Congress — who in this case
also represents the National Com-
munity Relations Advisory Coun-
cil, a coordinating body to which
the major Jewish organizations
are affiliated — and Phillip A.
Millstone, president of the Jew-
ish Community Council of Young-
stown.
Millstone and Pfeffer said that,
if necessary, the constitutional is-
sue in this case will be pressed
in the highest courts of the land.

NEW YORK — (WNS) — The
American Zionist Council has
charged Assistant Secretary of
State George G. McGhee with
taking sides in the dispute be-
tween Israel and Syria and there-
by prejudicing the prospects for
an early and final peace settle-
ment in the Middle East.
This was made known when
Louis Lipsky, chairman of the
Council, made public a statement
adopted by the organization's ex-
ecutive committee.
Mr. McGhee, the statement as-
serted, "would have served the
cause of peace in the Middle East
much better had he called—with-
out partisanship — upon Syria
and Israel" instead of seeing "fit
to rebuke the Israelis for their
reaction to Syrian provocation
and expressed regret over the
murder of seven Israelis by Syr-
ian forces."
It accused the State Department
of reluctance "to face the basic
issue that is involved, the refusal
of the Arab states to make peace
with Israel, their persistence in
boycotts and threats of aggres-
sion, their border raids and the
murder of Israel settlers."

The 1951 campaign of the United Jewish Appeal has
become the keystone of freedom for Israel and fir
hundreds of thousands of homeless Jews who must be
transferred to the Jewish State now. These Jews face
urgent emigration deadlines in Iraq, Iran, Roumania,
Libya and other lands of distress in Eastern Europe and
North Africa. Israel itself, seeking to give new oppor-
tunities to hundreds of thousands of new immigrants
from lands of distress must be helped now before the
world crisis forces a curtailment of assistance. To meet
the needs of the United Palestine Appeal, Joint Dis-
tribution Committee end United Service for New
Americana, the UJA requires a minimum of $203,-
684,517. American Jews now mobilizing behind com-
munity campaigns on behalf of the UJA must continue
the programs illustrated by these photos. (Upper left)

cued now. (Bottom, right) Youngsters brought to the
U. S. A. from European DP camps have plenty to sing
about; many more DM must be brought here at once.

Whether for the latest news
or the best in advertising, it
always pays to read the Jewish
Chronicle the year 'round.

PASSOVER GREETINGS

OMAHA — (WNS) — Charges
of deliberate exclusion of rabbis
Wishing Our Friends and Patrons
from important committees of the
Jewish Federation were made,
here by Rabbi Meyer S. Kripke of
A HAPPY PASSOVER
the Beth El Synagogue. He made
the charge at a meeting of the
Federation's executive committee.
According to a Federation offi-
cial admission of rabbis in the
committee would result in undue
weight by the rabbis on the
committees.
Rabbi Kripke pointed out that
TR. 3-5000

rabbis were sitting in on boards
of other organizations and that no
charge had ever been made that
