misused in this column, as well
as many others. Let's clarify that
term here and now.
There is no typical teenager,
nor is there a typical person.
Each person is
an individual
who thinks and
lives in a differ-
ent way.
No one likes to
be tiled away in
a neat little
classification and
left to be remem-
bered as such.
The term "typi-
cal teenager" Marcia
gives us a mental picture of a
sharp character who runs around
in a hot-rod, smoking cigars, and
painting the town red. This is not
true? I mean—this is not true!
Yet there is something that
makes all of us typical—the desire
to want to be alike, (with few ex-
ceptions), to be accepted in the
group, and to be popular.
Here we come across another
term whose meaning gives us
some trouble. Webster says popu-
larity is "being in favor with the
people at large." Applied to our
particular phase of life this means
being at the right places, at the
right times, with the right people,
wearing the right thing, doing the
right thing, and saying the right
