NEW YORK—(WNS)—A for-
mer Jewish inmate of a Nazi
concentration camp, accused by
a fellow camp inmate of having
committeed homicide, was cleared
here by a Jewish tribunal (Beth
Din) when the judges ruled the
accusation was based on mis-
taken identity.
The two chief figures in the
drama were Benjamin Krieger
and Meyer Mittleman, former in-
mates of the notorious Nazi con-
centration camp at Muhldorf.
Last June Krieger saw a man
passing before his store in
Brooklyn. Suddenly he ran out
and accused him of having
bludgeoned his brother, Zalman
Krieger, to death in the camp.
Mittleman denied the charge.
There was a minor altercation
and the police were called in.
But the court refused to inter-
vene on the ground of lack of
jurisdiction.
The three judges, Leo Pfeffer,
Rabbi Simon Federbush and Rab-
bi Joseph H. Lookstein, held the
evidence of witnesses pointed to
the fact that Mittleman had been
ill and incapacitated for five
weeks covering the time of the
alleged attack.
The decision said: "We do not
believe the evidence sufficient to
implicate Meyer Mittleman. On
the basis of all the testimony,
Meyer Mittleman must be ab-
solved of guilt of the death of
Zalman Krieger."
