BIRON nificant political role played by the General Zionist party in Israel until these recent municipal elections, our General Zionists have reasons to be proud and optimistic. Their party in Israel made an excellent showing. Yet nowhere, not even in the cities have they rolled up a majority. They ran behind Mapai even in Tel Aviv. There seems to be no doubt that the new oriental immigration, especially those housed in former Arab districts, were not impressed by the platform of the General Zionists. Right and left wing labor pulled the bigest vote from the newcomers. The oriental Jews are, naturally, not attracted by promises of private investments. They want strong labor unions that will fight for a higher standard of living and that will provide a measure of social security. Don't let us forget that in the recent municipal elections, the foreign policy of Israel, while much talked about, was in reality an artificial, rather irrelevant issue. For the municipal election results, which startled many an observer, are, according to our opinion, not necessarily indicative of a political trend toward General Zionism. They proved, first of all, that the rural and urban populations are not thinking alike on political matters. Tel Aviv with its quarter of a million inhabitants does not go for the austerity program of Mapai. The shopkeepers of Tel Aviv, and other communities, but strangely enough not Haifa, arc not socialistic-minded. The agricultural settlements and, of course, the militarily strategic areas know only to well that the Mapai and the Mapam constitute the power of the de- fense of the Jewish state against foreign aggression. In other words, youth voted labor while the older age levels voted General Zionist. The gains made by the General Zionists were made primarily at the expense of non-labor parties.
