College Head Sees Death
of West European Jewry

Dr. Neuman, the president of The Dropsie College, highest
institution of Jewish learning in the United States, has just
returned from a four months trip to Israel and EurOpe. In
addition to over a month spent in Israel, Dr. Neuman, one of
Jewry's foremost historians, visited seven countries of Europe-
England, France, Belgium, Italy, Holland, Switzerland and
Greece. In the following article, he gives his impressions of
Jewry and Judaism in Europe and Israel.-Ed.

deeply their contributions were
appreciated.
I was therefore doubly encour-
aged to propose in Jerusalem
various forms of cooperation be-
tween our American institutions
and their scholars and seats of
learning.
Chief among these proposals
was the undertaking of a great co-
operative history of the Jews
from earliest times to our own
period on a magnificent scale
similar to the celebrated Cam-
bridge Histories.
It is well known that there is
no adequatae history in any lan-
guage that does justice to the
experiences and achievements of
the Jewish people during their
long record of almost four thous-
and years.
No single author of talent or
genius can possibly cope with so
vast a subject.
Such an enterprise requires not
only the services of all the schol-
arly personnel of the Jewish
world; it must combine the philo-
sophic viewpoint of the new
Israel with the more universal
outlook of American scholarship.
I am happy to report that my
proposals met with interest and
understanding, and that I have
reason to feel that my suggestions
will bear fruit.
In the midst of the most per-
plexing economic, social and poli-
tical struggles in which the people
of Israel are engaged, there is
deep concern for cultural and
scholarly interests not only in
university circles but among the
men in government who daily
bear the brunt and hazards of an
heroic state.
