Citrus Industry
to Give Jobs
to Immigrants

JERUSALEM — (INS) — Some
12,000 new immigrants will be
employed in the citrus industry
during the coming season—out
of a total of 15,000 citrus work-
ers. The ministry of labor, co-
operating with the Histadrut
Citrus Packers' Union, has in-
augurated courses in fruit wrap-
ping, sorting, packing and car-
pentry required for crates for
some 3,000 newcomers now in
maabarot (temporary work set-
tlements) and immigrant villages
in 28 centers.
Eighty per cent of the trainees
are women and youths. Those
who are learning carpentry re-
ceive wages for the work they
finish in class, and packers who
attend evening classes will re-
ceive wages when the harvest
begins.
During the last citrus season
new immigrant workers were
transported from their camps to
the groves.
