Political Crisis in Israel Remains Unsolved

By PHINEAS J. BIRON
OTWITHSTANDING news reports, the Israeli gov-
ernment crisis is merely postponed. It has not
been solved.
Decisive factor in this temporary CI isis was the
Washington conference which launched
the 1 billion dollar campaign.
Weizmann told the various party
leaders that this was not the time to •
plunge the Jewish state into domestic
trouble. Besides, efforts were and still
are being made behind the scene to
sec'ire foreign loans from the U.S.
government and Canada.
But the Mapai-religious bloc coali-
tion cannot last and a special Knesset
commission is now formulating a bill

which would automatically call for

THE CANADIAN GOVERNMENT has issued a
cordial invitation to the German republic (western of
course) ,to send as many immigrants as may wish to
avail themselves of the invitation to Canada.
Canadian officials feel that their dominion needs
more German stock although one-third of the Canadian
population is of German descent.
Yet the danger of opening the gates to a mass influx
of Nazis is very real. The Canadian Jewish Congress is
concerned about this proposed Nazi immigration and has
asked the government to establish special screening
regulations to make certain that as few Nazis as

THERE WERE TIMES when the late George Ber-
nard Shaw was accused of anti-Semitism. He commented •
on several occasions on the so-called Jewish problem
in a way which aroused the indignation of Jewish
editorialists.
But Shaw intimates insisted that anti-Semitisni was
alien to the Shavian concept of life.
He did resent the "chosen people" complex and he

warned against the development of a chauvinistic
nationalism.
But on the other hand he greatly admired Jewish
and Hebrew contemporary literature and always
regretted that the realization of Zionism would prove
"a great loss" to the intellectual life of Europe if "too
many" Jews would depart permanently for the Jewish
state.

DEIT391INISIOIDAEL HISTADRUT CAMPAIGN

YESTERDAY—

only three decades ago, a brave

band of young Jews met in Haifa
under the leadership of David Ben
Gurion, to organize a cadre of
pioneers who would lay the foun-
dation of the Jewish State through
hard self-sacrificing labor in the
swamp valleys and barren hilltops
of Palestine. Yesterday, Histadrut
blazed the trail for millions of Jews
to come and build the land and de-
fend it against all odds.

TODAY—

as masses of Jews swarm into Is-
rael, they cope with overwhelming
economic problems. Top, priority
must be given to converting the
immigrants into productive workers
so that they may stand on their
own feet in the shortest possible
time. Today, Histadrut is the prime
creator of productive citizens in
Israel through its ever - growing
agricultural and industrial enter-
prizes and vocational training cen-

ters.
