General Anders Seeks Niche in Western Camp

G ENERAL

By PHINEAS J. BIRON
WLADYSLAW ANDERS, whatever his
personal resporsibility or his personal participation
in anti-Semitic activities may be, is unquestionably the
recognized leader of the reactionary r
and anti-Semitic segment of the Polish
people, wherever they reside.
And yet—this same Gen. Anders,
notwithstanding his non-existent pres-
ent military and civil status. was re-
ceived by the governments of Canada
and the United States of America with
the pomp, usually accorded to official
heads of states.
This enigma puzzled many self-re-
specting Jews.
Biron
What was his real mission to the United States and
Caniala?
Here is the inside story. We reconstructed it from
material we collected through numerous conversations
with individuals whose knowledge is reliable. The in-
vestigation we conducted revealed that the general
wants to reconstitute a Polish anti-Soviet army and it
possible re-establish a Polish government in exile.
Ever since the close of World War II, Anders enjoyed

the support of the British government (during Church-
ill's premiership and later a group of tories continued to
back him financially).
Britain's ministry of foreign affairs, under the leader-
ship of Ernest Bevin, used the remnant of the Anders
Legion in Palestine during the last, disgraceful phase of
the British military occupation of that country.
If the governments of Canada and the United States
really desired evidence of anti-Jewish activities on the
part of the Anders boys in Palestine, they should have
no trouble getting it from scores of eye-witnesses.
Yet the Palestine adventure of Anders is not the
eorst chapter of his career.
Anders always believed that Poland should be orient-
ed towards Germany, even Nazi Germany.
The military record of the Anders Legion during our
Nvar against Nazism was never made public. It was hailed
01 the British and American press as a great help to
democracy but the State Department has the evidence
that during the Nazi rape of Poland, Anders was more
concerned with destroying the Communist guerilla units
than with resisting the Nazis.
It is true that in the Italian campaign, when Anders
realized that the Nazi-Fascist cause was lost, he permit-
ted his legion to collaborate with the Allies.

But the diehards of the anti-Semitic Poland consider-
ed him still their leader.
We talked to several Jewish veterans of the Anders
Legion. They all agree that the army under his com-
mand was a hotbed of prejudice.
Anders travels like the head of a state, surrounded
by aides de camp, adjutants, staff officers and political
advisers.
While in Canada, he dispatched several of his ad-
jutants to the western section of that country where
about 4,000 of his former soldiers have established sev-
eral agricultural colonies.
The object of these emissaries was to find out how
many of these men would be willing to re-enlist if so
ordered. The general is itching to form a Polish contin-
gent and to place it under the high command of Gen.
MacArthur. There are good reasons to believe that
Anders made a formal offer to that effect to President
Truman.
We are further informed that Anders tried to con-
vince Truman and high officials that a large section of
the population in Poland is ready to shake off its present
regime and that if given a sufficient amount of American
dollars, he could make it hot for the government in
Poland,
