No Elections Arab League Offered
Until '53 Says Observer's Role in UN
Israel Premier LAKE SUCCESS—(Special)--An invitation to the Arab

,

TEL AVIV — (WNS) — Pre-
mier David Ben Gurion, in a
nationwide radio broadcast, de-
clared there will be no national
election in Israel before 1953.
Asserting that the strengthen-
ing of national defense and the
pressing of a vigorous immigra-
tion policy will continue as the
major objectives of the govern-
ment, the Premier appealed to
the people in Israel for coopera-
tion in the campaign to smash
the black market.

League to attend United Nations assembly sessions in the
role of observer was extended by the UN legal committee
over strong objections from Israel.

JWF Board Urges
Overall ige -ncy

The board of governors of the
Jewish Welfare Federation, at its
meeting Tuesday night, indorsed
in principle the setting up of a
single Jewish communal agency
to accommodate the functions of
the Jewish Community Council.
The board authorized the Fed-
eration's representatives of the
joint committee of the Federation
and the Council to negotiate
toward this end.
A motion by Morris Garvett to
approve a budget for the Com-
munity Council, which provides
for all projects in existence dur-
ing the last year, but no new
projects, was adopted by the
board. The resolution now awaits
approval by the executive com-
mittee.
Also approved by the board
was' a resolution to support a
central Israeli philanthropic fund.

The invitation carries no privi
loges of participation in the UN's
work,
The committee debated the
question whether the invitation
constituted a recognition of the
Arab League as a regional or-
ganization and whether the ac-
tions of the Arab League were
in harmony with the UN charter.
Representatives of the Arab
League asserted that the League
is a regional organization bound
by historical, geographical, poli-
tical and cultural ties.
Israel, however, maintained
that the League was an ethnic
organization and that such states
as Turkey, Iran, Afghanistan and
Pakistan were not members.
Syria and Lebanon declared
that the invitation was merely
a matter of diplomatic courtesy
and that it would foster closer

cooperation between the United
Nations and the Arab League.
Lebanon's foreign minister, at
a press conference here, admitted
that the Arab League is indeed
no regional organization, because
iL excluded a number of Middle
Eastern countries, including
Israel.

Israel Charges Syria
With Abducting Arabs

JERUSALEM-(WNS)—
Pre-
.
mier David Ben Gurion this week
asked and received from his cab-
inet special powers aimed at
smashing black marketeering ,and
illicit hoarding.
Among the powers granted the
Premier was the right to order
arrests, detain suspects, search
premises and confiscate goods
destined for the black market.
Immediately after the nation-
wide campaign to wipe out the
black market began, the police
carried out a number of searches
and arrested a number of men.

Zionists Ask
New Cabinet

TEL AVIV—(WNS)—A state-
ment demanding the formation
of a new cabinet to deal with
Israel's economic problems was
issued this week by the General
Zionist Party.
Calling Premier David Ben
Gurion's recent radio talk on the
country's economic situation "a
pre-election speech," the state-
ment charged that the govern-
ment program as "a palliative"
offering no improvement of the
economic situation and "no foun-
dation for restoring the public's
confidence in the government's
capability to overcome the crisis
or provide an appropriate atmos-
phere for encouraging invest-
ments" in Israel.

LONDON—(WNS)—Mounting
anti-Israel attacks in Russia and'
the satellite countries were fore-
cast here on the basis of a broad-
cast by the Bucharest radio and
Moscow dispatches broadcast by
Tass, official Soviet news agency.
The Bucharest radio denounced
the "Zionist propagandist" en-
couraging Jews to go to Israel
as "worthy successors to the
slave traders." The broadcast
also pictured recent arrivals in
Israel as living in 'promiscuity,
disease and starvation."

TEL AVIV — (Special)—Israel
leveled charges against Syria
with the armistice commission
charging that eight Syrian sol-
diers crossed her frontier 12
miles north of Tiberias and ab-
ducted three Israeli Arabs.
The complaint stated that the
Syrians had attempted to steal
flocks belonging to an Arab tribe.

Neo.Jews, Erect Stone Altar in Michigan

WEST OLIVE, Mich.—(WNS)—Fifty former
Christians who have just adopted Judaism and
hundreds of visitors from surrounding areas,
gathered here last week to dedicate the first
biblical altar constructed since the destruction of
the Temple of Jerusalem.
The ceremony was held at the homestead of
John Goodin. The stone altar, over five feet high
and eight feet square, was designed with four
horns from the description taken from Hebrew
manuscripts.

• At the same time road patrols
detained several truckloads of
produce believed destined for ,
black market channels.
In a move to accelerate the
trial of suspected black mark-
eteers and hoarders, 40 Special
tribunals have been set up. •
The government's action met
the speedy approval of unions,
trade organizations and other
bodies. Support of the Premier's
all-out campaign was voiced by
the Merchants Association in Tel
Aviv in a statement denouncing
black marketing as one of the
main dangers facing the country.
The association called on its
members to place all their stock
at the disposal of the public at
official prices. The Association
also opened 10 bureaus in Tel
Aviv and 20 in surrounding vil-
lages to deal with complaints
from the public.
