Zionists Lose Grip on Leadership in America

BY FIIINEAS J. BIRON
N INTERESTING PHENOMENON is taking place in
American Jewish life. During the heyday of the
Zionist Wiggle for Jewish statehood, Zionist leadership
in this country gradually displaced the
non-Zionist Jewish leaders as spokes-
men for the American Jewish commu-
nity.
It could not be otherwise. As the
reconstitution of a Jewish nation in
Palestine neared its goal, all other
Jewish problems appeared small and
unimportant in comparison.
Statehood in Palestine encompassed
also the solution of the DP problem in
Europe.
Biron
Besides there was dynamic determ-
ination in the American Zionist leadership of that period
as personified by Stephen Wise, Hillel Silver and Eman-
uel Neumann. Their impact on American Jewry in the
months immediately preceding the establishment of
Israel was so all-embracing that the non-Zionist leader-
ship had no alternative but to bow out and assume a
"me too" attitude.
• • •
AFTER THE ESTABLISHMENT of the Jewish state,

A

non-Zionists, however, have recaptured the leadership
of the American Jewish community.
Their comeback was facilitated by the withdrawal of
Silver and Neumann and by the untimely death of
Stephen Wise.
The masterminds of the American Jewish Committee
have scored a conclusive victory because they outma-
neuvred the second-string Zionist leaders, the Frischs,
the Lipskys, the N. Goldmanns, the Goldsteins, etc.
The non-Zionists dropped their anti-Zionist policy
and set out to reshape the American Zionist movement
and to influence the Israeli leadership by insisting that
they as American Jewish leaders, had an important stake
in Zionist and Israeli affairs.
The American Jewish Committee was more than
scared by the establishment of the now defunct Ameri-
can Jewish Conference several years ago. It realized
that in a democratically constituted Jewish organiza-
tional setup the Committee would be a negligible factor.
It recognized that the American Jewish Conference
meant the ascendancy of Zionism in American Jewish
life.
• •
SO, THE COMMITTEE destroyed the Conference,
formed its own unofficial Conference and stepped up .the
organization of community councils all over the country,

a move which permitted it to direct the domestic policies
of the American Jewish Congress.
The master architects of this strategy were Judge
Proskauer and John Slawson of the Committee.
During the Silver-Neumann interlude, the Commit-
tee's leadership did not attempt to oppose the Zionist
tide but rode it, convinced that the realization of Zion-
ism would automatically weaker! the Zionist hold on
American Jewry,
✓ And when the Israel government, stupidly jealous of
the political prestige of American Zionist leadership,
turned to the wealthy non-Zionist Jews for help, the
non-Zionist comeback was complete.
The billion dollar campaign to be launched next year
will give the coup de grace to Zionist hegemony in
America.
When the editor of the American Jewish Committee
magazine "Commentary" stated recently that Zionist
ideology was dead having given place to a philanthropic
conception, he was right.
Today the Zionist prexy Browdy does enter the White
House but merely to present the American President
with a plaque. But it is the Blausteins and Proskauers
who have the ear of Truman and the State Department
on all Jewish matters affecting domestic and, for that
matter, Israeli affairs.
