and Resettlement Service

OUTSTANDING EVENT in the activities of the
agency during the year just closed has been the great
increase in the number of displaced persons coming to our
community.
During the fiscal year ending last May, 408 men, women
and children from the DP camps settled in Detroit on Corn-
munity assurances provided by the Joint Distribution Com-
mittee. (This is exclusive of an approximately equal number
who came here on individual assurancesprovided by rela-
tives.)

This large influx necessitated a (supplied in part through the co-
strengthening and streamlining of operation of the Jewish House
our services. Housing had to be of Sheller) and later in individ-
provided, first through temporary ual flats or apartments.

prisingly good. But like everyone
else, they need occasional medical

Ninety per cent of the arrivals

them which a job and the sense

Ever since the Jewish Chil-

because of a declining popula-
tion, the number of children re-
quiring community aid on ac-
count of neglect or dependency
has been geeting smaller. Those
that remain can be satisfactorily
provided for in foster family
homes.
However, increasingly there
have come to the agency's at-
tention children whose difficulties-' ,
arise not from poverty or psysi-
cal neglect, but from Psychologi-
cal factors requiring expert case-
work and psychiatric treatment.
The specific plan calls for the
establishment of a small resi-
dence home, which would provide
a therapeutic environment for 10
children who would be under
careful supervision, whose trou-
bles would be scientifically stud-
ied and who would be guided
toward a satisfactory adjustment
with their families.
