Bypass New Zealand

NEW YORK — (WNS) —The
Jewish communities of America
are experiencing "their most'
strenuous and active period" and
the Council of Jewish Federa- 1
tions and Welfare Funds has re- '
corded the "most intensive ac-
tivity" of its history during the
first half of 1950, according to
a report made public by Stan-
ley C. Myers, president of the
organization.
In giving the highlights of the
CJFWF program thus far in
1950, Myers pointed out that its
work is being actively directed
and guided by more than 300
lay and professional community
leaders who are participating in
the programs of more than 25
national, regional and depart-
mental committees.

sions in my country, he went on,
"there is only one synagogue and
we are all under the jurisdiction
of the chief rabbi of Great Bri-
tain."
Gotlieb pointed out that the
government is pro-Jewish and
pro-Israel and supported the
Israel position even during the
Israeli war of independence with
the British.
Jews have held such positions
as prime minister and chief jus-
tice in the country, he said. The
reason there is so little anti-Sem-
- itism in New Zealand is that there
is little competition for a liveli-
hood and the people are satisfied
and happy, Gotlieb added.
Gotlieb met Dr. Hoffman in
New Zealand when the doctor
was in the navy as a hospital
specialist and was stationed in
that country. Dr. Hoffman was
the guest of the Gotliebs in 1942.
The hospitality is now being re-
turned in part.
A luncheon in honor of Got-
lieb was given Wednesday, Aug.
16 at the Tuller Hotel. He ad-
dressed the Zionist Organization

"Why have an annual charity
drive if theie are no poor?"
"Why fight anti-Semitism if there
are no anti-Semites?" This is the
happy situation that the Jews of
New Zealand find themselves in,
according to Isaac Gotlieb of that
country.
Gotlieb, who is president of the
New Zealand Zionist Organiza-
tion, is the house guest of Dr.
Max Hoffman of LaSalle boule-
vard. He is on his way to the
Zionist Congress which will meet
in December in Israel.
There are less than 4,000 Jews
in the island dominion out of a
, population of 2,000,000, of whom
1,500 arrived since 1933, Gotlieb
said. Most of the new arrivals
'have integrated themselves with
the Jewish community although
some have assimilated with the
Gentiles in fear of a future out-
break of anti-Semitism.
"The Zionist Oragnization is
• very strong in New Zealand and
motivates all of Jewish life," Got-
lieb stated. "We have no parties
but approach the General Zion-
ists in our middle-of-the-road out-

Louis Rosenzweig, chairman of
Internal Relations Committee of
the Jewish Community Council,
has issued the following state-
ment:
Many persons in the 12th street
area have reported repeated tele-
phone calls, post cards and per-
sonal visitations from real estate
brokers in the section. These per-
sons have no intention of selling
their homes and have expressed
great annoyance at these meth-
ods of procuring listings of homes
for sale.
It is no secret that panic and
rumor in the 12th street area is,
in some measure, due to such ac-
tivities on the part of some real
estate firms operating in this sec-
tion.
One home owner, for example,

reported that within a 10-day pe-
riod he received five post cards
offering to list his home for sale.
A firm negative reply to these
persons will often save home
owners a great deal of time and
difficulty. It is illegal for any
firm to promote listings by
spreading rumors which have no
basis in fact concerning the sale
of homes. Violations of this sort
are characterized as "misrepre-
sentation" by the Real Estate Di-
vision of the Michigan Corpora-
tion and Securities Commission
and should be reported to the lo-
cal office of the Securities and
Exchange Commission or to the
Jewish Community Council.
