Temple Israel's Own Home
to Be Ready for Holy Days

The building of Temple Israel,
which has been in process of
con 4 ruction for the past year,
be ready to house its first
High Holy Day Services begin-
ning Rosh Hashana Eve, Mon-
day, Sept. 11,
The new temple is located in
the Palmer Park section, at
Manderson and Merton roads,
one block east of Pontchartrain
boulevard, and one block north
of Six Mile road.
The circular, white, Indiana
limestone edifice, designed by
William E. Kapp, architect, and
built by the Lerner-Linden Con-
struction Co., is being acclaimed
as one of the most beautiful
synagogue structures in Amer-
ica. The seating capacity of the
auditorium is 1,500.
Temple Israel was founded
nine years ago. The spiritual
leader of the congregation, Rabbi
Leon Fram, is now celebrating
the 25th anniversary of his min-
istry in Detroit. Cantor Robert
S. Tulman, formerly of the Wies-
baden Opera, has chanted the
services since the inception of
the congregation. Karl W. Haas
is organist and director of the
choir.
Temple Israel, a liberal Jewish
congregation, has a membership
of 800 families, and a religious
school enrolment of 800 children.
Sol R. Colton is chairman of
the building fund committee
which has been raising the sum
of $650,000, the cost of the build-
ing.
Louis H. Schostak is chairman
of the building committee which
planned and supervised the con-
struction of the edifice. The of-
ficers of the congregation are:
Harry C. LeVine, president;
Jacob A. Citrin, vice-president;
Arthur J. Haas, secretary, and
Louis H. Schostak, treasurer.

Young. Israel

Mrs. David B. Werbe, well
known artist, has been engaged
as the director of the Young Is-
rael art program for the coming
year. This marks another step in
t h e cultural development of
"youth group" activities in the
Dexter area.
The development of the School
of Fine Arts in the new Young
Israel building was ratified by the
board of directors at their meet-
ing on Aug. 9.
"With the advent of Mrs. Wer-
be as director of our fine arks
program, all those who have a
desire for creative expression in
the field of art and art apprecia-
tion will be able to participate in
our new program," stated Jer-
ome W. Kelman, newly elected
chairman of the board of direc-
tors.
Mrs. Werbe holds the position
of chairman of the board and the
past president of the National
Arts Association; vice-president
of the Detroit Fine Arts Alliance;
life-governing member of the De-
troit Museaum of Art Founders
Association and a past officer of
the Alumni of the Art Institute
Association of Chicago.
"I hope to bring to Young Is-
rael and through Young Israel to
the community at large, my many
years of experience, not alone in
the field of formal training in the
arts, but also to develop an ap-

precation for art work and artists
among those who have had no
formal training heretofore in this
field," stated Mrs. Werbe in ac-
cepting this position.
