"My father of blessed memory
regarded voting as so sacred a
privilege that he felt a blessing
should be devised to be recited
when one casts a ballot.
"How seriously we, the Jews of
Michigan regard this right will
be indicated by our response to
the opportunity to vote by ab-
sentee ballots. To refrain through
indifference, neglect or thought-
lessness from voting this year is
to commit a compound sin, a sin
against democracy, and .another
that will reflect upon our entire
Jewish Community.
"I earnestly appeal to - all
Jewish voters to fill out applica-
tion blanks for ballots. Let no
Jew fail in his duty as a citizen.
"I trust that the number of
votes cast by Jews will reveal a
high degree of civic responsi-
bility and interest as well as
loyalty to the Jewish tradition
as represented by our observance
of Rosh Hashonah."

no one need be disenfranchised
because of the coincidence of an
election day with his holiday.
"It has often been said that the
touchstone of a democratic society
is to be found in its attitude to
its minorities. As long as the
rights of a minority are recog-
nized and its opportunities to
participate in the civic, political,
and economic life of the country
are not restricted, democracy will
remain strong and stable.

The Chronicle joins with
Rabbi Morris Adler, chairman of
the council's absentee voting
committee, in urging all Jews
to request the absentee ballot.
This ballot is available specific-
ally for observant Jews who can-
not go to the polls on Sept. 12
as it is a religious holiday.
In order to apply, you must
be a registered voter. If you
have voted in the last election,
you are registered. If you have
not voted in two years, or if
your address has changed since
you last voted, you must regis-
ter. Registration may be ac-
complished in Room 110 of City
Hall any weekday.
If you are registered. you fill
out the application, giving the
date of the election as Sept. 12,
1950. You then give your name
as shown on your voting regis-
tration, your address, and your
ward and district number. All
this is found on your voting reg-
istration card.

Yet must indicate that you
live at the address you gave.
Next give your occupation, and
finally the address to which the
ballot is to be sent.
Then fill in the date. Applica-
tions must be dated after Aug.
13, 1950 and before Sept. 9.
Then sign your name and mail
the application to:

"The action of the Michigan
Legislature in passing and of the
governor of our State in approv-
ing a bill which makes it possible
for those who fur religious rea-
sons cannot vote in primary
elections which take place during
a religious festival, to cast an
absentee ballot, is in the finest
traditions of democracy.

TEL AVIV —(WNS)— James
G. McDonald, American ambas-
sador to Israel and dean of the
diplomatic corps here, has re-
signed his post and will not re-
turn to Israel after his two years
of service end on August 12.
It is generally believed here
that McDonald, who has been
greatly interested in Zionism and
has made many lecture tours on
behalf of the cause, will upon his
return to the United States be-
come associated with the United
Jewish Appeal or one of its af-
filiated organizations.
