Anti-Jewish Propaganda Uses Mailing Exemption

By PHINEAS J. BIRON
T HE U.S. CONGRESS
is trying to investigate the

activities of several anti-Semitic groups, backed by

a few un-American members of the

House, who are extremely generous
with their congressional free mailing
privileges.
It has already been proven that
these abusers of the postage ex-
emption have been responsible for
the distribution of tens of millions of
propaganda pieces issued by these
bigoted outfits.
We have been asked by a number
of correspondents to publish a few
Biron
samples of the kind of "literature"
these hate groups are issuing.
Here is an exhibit from Merwin K. Hart's National
Economic Council:
"American Christians who are solicited to contrib-
ute to the United Jewish Appeal—let them remember
that many prominent Communists and Communist
sympathizers are also Zionists."
Here is one from Upton Close, the former radio

commentator, now working very closely with these
groups:
"Marxists are trying to smear all persons who are
against them by labeling them anti-Semitic.... Those
Jews who have been in this country only a few years
and who don't read anything but the . Communist
papers have been taken in by the Communists."
And another one from Mr. Merwin K. Hart's plant
of hate-propaganda:
"Clearly a minority of a minority—for multitudes
of Jews are loyal Americans and they thank God they
live here—now seek to destroy the very religion and
culture that have given them refuge • • . This audacious
attempt to suppress consciousness of Christianity has
come only with the rise of the Zionists to power in the
Jewish community, and the blame must be laid secure-
ly on Zionist shoulders."
We could go on quoting from the prolific pens of
the many groups, who, under a variety of masks—the
anti-Communist being by far the most dominant—are
either openly proclaiming their hate or slyly insinuat-
ing suspicion of the Jews.
While the A.D.L. report of 1950 "A Measure of

JWF Board to Submit Budget
for Local Drive Beneficiaries

Investigates Bias

Freedom" (from which we quoted the above excerpts)
does include the exponents of this new type of anti-
Semitism, it does not draw the inescapable conclusion
that this new look in anti-Semitism is succeeding in
capturing political and economic positions which a few
years ago would have been regarded as impregnable
to any assault by anti-Semitic groups.

ONLY A SHORT time ago, the U.S. Foreign Policy
Association was far from sympathetic to the Zionist
movement.
As a matter of fact, whenever its official publica-
tions discussed affairs of the Near East, one could not
help but feel that their outlook was definitely oriented
towards the Arabs.
The May 15 issue of its Report, however, features
an article "Israel After Two Years" by Edward A.
Norman, president of the American Fund for Israel
Institutions.
Norman is a non-Zionist in the political sense, but
has been a consistent friend of Jewish Palestine for
many years.
His article reflects a fair and intelligent attitude
towards the problems facing the Jewish state.
