Browdy Succeeds Late Daniel Frisch as President CHICAGO—(WNS)—The future of the Zionist move- ment and the reorientation of American ZionisM- were the highlights on the agenda of the 53rd annual convention of the Zionist Organization of America as 2,000 delegates gathered in a five-day conclave. • Before the convention opened, Benjamin G. Browdy, newly elected president of ZOA, made public a list of statements by leading American public figures lauding Israel's role as a demo- cratic outpost in the Middle East and calling on all free nations, including the United States, for the support of the Jewish state in its struggle for security and . peace. The messages also paid tribute to the Zionist Organization of America for the part it played in the establishment of Israel as an independent nation. One of the messages, by Secre- tary of the Interior Oscar S. Chapman, lauded the "great con- tributions" of the Zionist Organ- ization of America "to the cause of democracy and freedom in the new nation of Israel." A similar 'message was received from Secre- tary of Agriculture Charles F. Brannon. Secretary of Commerce Charles Sawyer stressed the need for eco- nomic aid to Israel, while Attor- hey General J. Howard McGrath viewed "a strong, democratic Is- rael" as "a bulwark of free peo- ple in that area of the globe." He called the ZOA "a powerful in- strumentality for continued Jew- ish physical, cultural and spirit- ual development," adding that by supporting the new Jewish state the ZOA "is also making a signifi- cant contribution to the peace of the world." °ratification over the contribu- tions made by the American trade union movement to the State of Israel was voiced by William Green, president of the American Federation of Labor, and Philip Murray, president of the Congress of Industrial Organizations. Both labor leaders called for Israel's continued support by the free na- tions of the world. Gov. Thomas E. Dewey of New York deplored the factors which are compelling Israel "to allot an exhausting share of its funds to defense against aggression" at a time when the fledgling state should "devote all available funds" to the purpose of absorb- ing immigrants and providing them with homes and livelihood. Confidence in Israel as a demo- cratic outpost in the middle East was expressed by Rep. John W. McCormack, Democratic house majority leader and Rep. Joseph W. Martin, Jr., minority leader. AMEIC, under auspices of Mizrachi Organization of America, also ships machin- ery, tools and foodstufTs to help "build Eretz Israel in the spirit of traditional Judaism." Abba Hillel Silver, who stated that this confusion had been ag- gravated "by the failure of the government of Israel to define and make for the movement its specific responsibilities in the field of fund-raising, immigration and settlement." Silver told the convention that "American Jews were beginning to walk away from an organiza- tion which has no serious role to play in fund-raising for Israel, since the government of Israel has clearly indicated its prefer- ence for non-Zionist control over fund-raising in the United States." Louis Lipsky warned that un- less a unified Zionist organiza- tion were set up within a unified Jewish community, "there would ensue a demoralization out of which will come the reduction in the influence and authority of RELAX and VACATION at COOPER'S RESORT THREE RIVERS, MICHIGAN Private Beach, Fishing, Boating, Excellent Jewish Cooking For Information or Reservations: Write or Phone 27422 3ver 3 haws from Ckic000 enjoy a Vocation at the largest and most beautiful resort in the middle west.
