TWA Lockout of Staff Bewilders Zionists

'lly PHINEAS J. BIRON

O When, last week, we criticized its leadership for

UR APOLOGIES to the Anti-Defamation League.

"blundering" in connection with the cancellation of
the address of Benjamin J. Butten-
wiser, we were not in possession of
all the facts.
It appears from the evidence at
hand that it was Buttenwiser, who
exhibited bad faith. It was he who
asked for the invitation, fully aware
that the ADL stood committed to a
view opposing his own attitude on
the denazification policy.
Besides, Buttenwiser's letter to the
ADL office stated that "I hope my
Biron
discussion will be along the lines
you envisaged and %%111 serve the purpose of what, I
repeat. is your and Judge Steinbrink's valued invita-
tion to address your meeting"
But Buttenwiser. knew that Judge Steinbrink was
critical of the State Department policy in Germany
and he surely knew that the text of his (Butten-
weiser's) speech was a complete apologia for that
policy.

They are no more Communist, than. let us say,
Morris Rothenberg, president of the UPA.
They are bewildered and fail to understand this
reactionary attitude on the part of an organization
which stresses its help to the building. in Israel, of a
"commonwealth based on social justice."

BIG DEADLINES announced recently that the
western Big Three will sell arms to Israel and Arabs.
In some circles, even among Zionists, this declara-
tion was hailed as a diplomatic triumph for Israel.
The truth, however, is rather different.

- Linder the circumstances the ADL had no alterna-
tive but to act as it did.
We are satisfied that the argument of freedoni of
speech does slot enter into' this incident. Sorry, we

•

were wrong.

ON 42ND STREET, in New York City, close to
Grand Central Station, every day, for the last few
weeks, Jewish girls have been picketing the building
in which the United Palestine Appeal has its head-
quarters.
Even a precursory examination of the reasons for

First of all this statement does not promise the sale
-of arms to Israel. It merely states that the powers
will consider applications for such purchases in the
light of the need for "internal security of the Arab
States and Israel, providing for their legitimate self-
defense and helping them take part in the defense of
the whole area."
Israel has no internal security problem. It needs
war materials to defend itself against a possible ag-
gression of the Arab states.
If peace in the Middle East were the real aim of
the three powers, a total embargo on arms to the
entire Middle East would guarantee .it.

this picket line show that the UPA management is to
blame for this lamentable state of affairs.
For a number of years the UPA management en-
tertained pleasant relations with the United Office and
Professional Workers of America. During the recent
internal conflict in the CIO the UOPWA was charged
with being "Communist dominated" and ousted from
the CIO.
Surrendering to this hysterical atmosphere, the
UPA management locked out the entire staff of 18
office workers who were members of the ousted union.
These girls are fervent Zionists, who believed in
the cause they were working for.
