AJ Committee Under Fire From Judaism Council

By PHINEAS J. BIRON

THE FEUD BETWEEN the Council for Judaism and
the American Jewish Committee is not just a pub-
licity stunt.
One of the Council leaders proposed
the other day that the Council instead
of defending itself against the Com-
mittee's attack t4t , the offensive.
This leader, and he is not alone,
feels that the Committee is very vul-
nerable, because it is not paying suf-
ficient attention to its primary task,
that of defending Jewish interests, in
other words, fighting anti-Semitism.
The supporters of this trend in the
Biron
Council say that since the Committee .

Zionists.

The controversy is becoming more acute every day
and it is rumored that several more or less prominent
members of the American Jewish Committee are con-
sidering resigning and joining forces with the Council
for Judaism.

The pattern of policies that guide some of our top
agencies of Jewish defense is well described by John
Hersey, when he deals with the Warsaw Judenrat in
his best seller ''The Wall."

AMONG THE MESSAGES of congratulations re-
ceived by the government of Israel was one of more
than passing interest.
The message came from the Jewish community of
the Belgian Congo.
There are 1,300 Jews in the Belgian Congo, most of
them living in the capital of that territory, Elizabeth.
The community has a Chevrah Kadisha, a shoetree and
a Zionist organization. Most of the members of the
Elizabeth Jewish Community are Spanish Jews who
came in 1911 from Turkish territories. Now they
want to get to Israel although most of them are rather
prosperous.
