STRICTLY CONFIDENTIAL

Israel Education Unsettled by Lack of Constitution

By PH1NEAS .1. BIRON
THE DEBATES ON THE educational system in
Israel are not proceeding very favorably in the
Knesset.
Each political party is clinging to its narrow con-
cept of ideological schools.
The greatest obstacle is the ab-
sence of a constitution, which might
compel unity and define the spheres
Of the synagogue and the state.
Whether we are religious or not,
most of us agree with the American
principal of the separation of church
and state. We, in accordance with
the American concept of democracy,
believe that worship is a private
matter that should be kept apart
Biron
from political life.
In Israel today, however, there is a strong political
religious bloc, sharing in the responsibility of gov-
ernment.
And since the Mapai, in order to stay in power,
is dependent on the support of this religious bloc it
is forced to make compromises.
As a matter of fact it is because of this coalition
that Premier David Ben Gurion is delaying the
promulgation of a constitution.
In debates for a unified school system, the re-

ligious bloc has shown itself adamant. It wants a
religious school system or the retention of a party
school system.
The religious parties have already gained an im-
portant advantage. It has been agreed by all parties
that the educational system in the immigrant camps
be an orthodox religious system.
The strong labor parties, on the other hand, insist
that socialist ideology be the basis for public edu-
cation.

«
EVER SINCE THE RETIREMENT of Hank Green-
berg, the home run king of Detroit, Jewish baseball
fans have been yedming for a new Jewish baseball
idol.
There were times when Benny Leonard the light-
weight champion of the ring was, probably, the most
popular Jewish public figure in America.
The late Nathan Straus used to say that "one
Benny Leonard does more to counteract anti-Semi-
tism than dozen of organizations and committees"
It is generally recognized that Jackie Robinson,
Brooklyn's first baseman and one of the top players
in the profession has accomplished more against anti-
Negro discrimination than any other human factor.
So there is a great deal of interest in several
Jewish players who will be striving 'to reach the
heights in the coming season.

We are told that the best candidates for natimed
fame are A. L. Rosen of the Cleveland team, Cal
Abrams of the Brooklyn Dodgers, and Myron Gins-
burg of the Detroit Tigers.
It is of course possible that these youngsters may
fail in their attempts to make the grade but there
can be no doubt that Jewish sport fans are pulling
for them and wish them success.

KURT WEIL, who died a few weeks ago was one

of the most gifted composers of our time.
Son of a German cantor, he had forged for him-
self an important position in contemporary music in
Germany. When Hitler took over he managed to
escape.
He came to this country as a member of the famous
triumvirate responsible for the Eternal Road which
Weisgal produced in New York in 1937.
The other two were Max Reinhardt, the director,
and Franz Werfel, the poet and playwright.
Now all three are dead.
These artists were responsible for one of the most
inspiring spectacles, a dramatic epic on the tragedy
of the Jewish refugee.
It is perhaps significant that all three lost interest
in the Jewish tragedy when the Eternal Road closed
and devoted themselves to general themes..

Negro Pastor Lauds Wise

Preaching on his theme, "What
Rabbi Stephen S. Wise Meant to
the Negro People," Rev. Robert
Bradby of the Greater King Solo-
mon Baptist Church, pointed out
Sunday, April 16, that the "late
leader had fought with all the
fiber of his being against those
elements in American life who
were not only enemies of the
Jewish people, but the Negro

people and all people."
"If a man's love for all people
is to be judged by the degree of
self-sacrifice and consuming pas-
sion, with which he fights for the
lives and rights and liberties of
his fellow human beings, no mat-
ter what their color, race, or
creed, than no man ever showed
such love as Rabbi Wise," Rev.
Bradby declared.
