Canadian Anti-Semites and U. S. Jew Haters Unite

By PHINEAS J. BIRON
IF WE UNDERSTAND correctly an interesting article
by Will Maslow in the March 27 issue of Congress
Weekly, it would seem that although American Jews
are under heavy anti-Semitic pres-
sure they feel secure.
The reason for this feeling of se-
curity, Maslow writes, is based on the
strength of the American tradition of
equality and freedom.
And since "security and self-re-
spect," concludes the director of the
commission on law and social action
of the American Jewish Congress,
"foster and reinforce each other,"
American Jewish security is in a
goo.1 way. Biron
We agree with Maslow up to a point. A Jewish
community, in order to be effective, must feel secure
and self-reliant. We also believe that American Jewry
is not afraid.

,

. But self-confidence is only healthy if it does not
ignore the danger it faces.
An interesting commentary on Maslow's slightly too
complacent self-assurance can be found in the Pass-
over issue of Opinion, the publication which Dr. Steph-
en S. Wise edited for close to 20 years.
An article, which deals with the re-birth of organiz-
ed anti-Semitism in this country, maishals documen-
tary evidence, that anti-Semitism is on the increase
and that American Jewry seems to be unaware of the
consolidation of anti-Semitic elements in the United
States.
The united front of anti-Semitism, now being forged
in the United States, is expanding. Recently, Canadian
anti-Semitic groups joined the American anti-Jewish
front.
The most prominent anti-Semitic forces in the prov-
ince of Quebec have accepted the leadership of Merwin
K. Hart's National Economic Council. The pact began
to operate in Montreal a few weeks ago.
Adrien Arcand, Canada's most notorious pro-fas-

cist and anti-Semite was the guest speaker at the
University of Montreal.
Although his subject had been announced as "Com-
munism in Quebec," 'Professor' Arcand dealt with
the Jewish danger to Canada. Word for word, Arcand
repeated Hart's text on the Jewish-Communist con-
spiracy.
The Canadian Jewish Congress, whose formula of
defending Jewish interests is patterned after the
American Jewish Committee (it is not affiliated with
the American Jewish Congress) does not take Mon-
sieur Arcand seriously.
It regards this effective rabblerouser and organizer,
who enjoys the full support of the high dignitaries of
the Catholic Church in Quebec, as a crackpot, or just
as the American Jewish Committee classifies G.L.K.
Smith, who incidentally is gaining strength and is
working in close harmony with Merwin K. Hart, a
crackpot.
But there is nothing to worry about, the American
Jewish Committee feels very secure.
