Browdy Likely o Be the Next President of ZOA

By PIIINEAS J. BIRON

However, Frisch with a diplomatic skill worthy
of a Jim Farley built up throughout the country so
much personal support that there was no way of

reaching consequences.

Frisch's presidency marked a turning point not
so much in the policies of the ZOA but in its type of
leadership.,
Unlike most of his predecessors,
with the exception of Louis Lipsky,
he brought to the Zionist move-
ment little it any outside prestige.
Whatever he represented as a pub-
lic figure he had acquired in the
Zionist movement. •
He was in no 'sense of the word
a • Zionist theoretician or for that
matter a Zionist orator. But Frisch
was the, first' Zionist politician who
knew how to play politics within
the movement.
This is nut said in any disparaging . s.ense. As a
matter. of fact, it is meant as a tribute to his re-
sourceful activity which led him to the office of the
presidency.
It is of course an open secret that Frisch was not
wanted as president, neither the Silver group nor
the Lipsky faction considered him a serious can-
didate,

Now that the Frisch interlude is over the ZOA is
once more confronted with the same conflict that
thi'eatened to break up last year's convention.

The Lipsky groups will probably back Benjamin
G. Browdy of Brooklyn, a substantial business man
who for years has played an active role in the munici-
pal politics of New York.

Browdy is a staunch Frisch man who believes
that the function of the ZOA is to provide con-
sti•uetive support to Israel.

Like Frisch he has no patience for the personal
controversies between Dr. Nahum Goldmann and
• Rabbi Silver, nor does he think that American Zion-
ists can carry on an independent policy from that of
the Israeli government.

The Silver and Neumann men, on the other hand
feel—with some justification—that the Zionist leader-
ship in America can and should be . the political bridge
between the American government, the UN, and the
jsraeli .government.

MORE THAN RUMORS have been circulated that
a movement is on foot to give Franco the kosher

label.

The recent report from Spain made by Brooklyn :3
Jewish Congressman Abraham Muller is not the first
trial balloon. Other non-Jewish travelers have pointed
out that the 5,000 Jews of Spain are leading a secure
and autonomous existence under the Fascist regime
of Franco.
It is said in well-informed circles that a deal has
been concluded between certain prominent Catholic
leaders and very eminent Jewish leaders' in this
Country, and that these favorable reports ,about .IVW7
ish life in Spain are forerunners of public support,
by influential Jewish groups for the admission . of
Franco into the United Nations.
There are even some Zionist leaders in this .
country who have the fantastic notion. that support
of Franco might change the Vatican's attitude on the
internationalization of Jerusalem.
This belief is not shared by the Israeli government.

rase of false optimism adopted

by friends of Israel who are too
sure 01 themselves, will become
clear soon' when Israel and .Jor-
dan will be invited by the Coun-
cil to co-operate in putting the
statute into effect.
In the meantime, however, the
Arab extremists have dealt the
hand their way.
