Page 16 DETROIT JEWISH CHRONICLE `Buy a Brick' —JWV's Battleery for Completition of It's New Home By EUNICE MINTZ lc BUY A BRICK." That will be the slogan Detroit Jewry will hear Sunday, March 26, when the Jewish War Vet- erans stage a door-to-door cam- paign in the Jewish community to solicit funds to finish paying for and furnishing their new building on Petosky and Davi- son. The new JWV home, which is combined with the Dexter Cen- tel., is the first Jewish memorial home of its type ever 'erected in the United States. • • IN OTHER CITIES JWV has converted homes and buildings, but Detroit is the first city to have a JWV building erected , solely for that purpose. The home will have a separate memorial room to honor Michi- gan's Jewish boys who were kill- ed in action during World War 11. The room will have their pic- tures, and plaques and scrolls on the wall will tell their histories. Some 300 Michigan Jewish boys were killed in the last war. The local JWV posts and aux- iliaries are named in honor of Detroit soldiers who were killed in action. The Lt. Raymond Zuss- man Post is named for a De- troiter who was awarded the Congressional Medal of Honor. • JWV, WHICH HAS a national membership of 100,000, is the oldest veteran organization in the United States still in exist- ence. Referred to as the "patriotic voice of Jewry," the organiza- tion is the only Jewish group with an accredited lobbyist in WaShington. JWV lobbies for leg- islation beneficial not only to veterans, but to Jews as a whole, such as FEPC and civil rights. The local JWV posts and aux- iliaries do various types of work, including aid for Israel. Once when Israel needed small arms, Detroit JWV members collected so many that Israel sent them a request to stop—they were send- ing more than enough. The auxiliaries do a great deal of hospital work. They visit vet- eran hospitals, donate gifts to the patients, and, at Christmas time, aid the Gentile veteran groups in making Christmas more pleasant for the hospitalized Gen- tile veterans. • • • THE WOMEN'S auxiliaries na- 'tional projects include a $150,000 hospital wing in an Israeli hos- pital and two scholarships at Brandeis University. " At the same time Crum lashed out against Secretary of State Dean Acheson's policy with re- _ gard to shipment of arm.s to the Arab states.
