Indian Jews. in Mexico Assert
They're of Marrano Descent

TEL AVIV — (WNS) — Prof.
Raphael Patai of the Hebrew
University has conducted an ex-
tensive survey in Mexico, study-
ing the village of Venta Prieta,
whose Mexican Indian popula-
tion includes both Jews and
Catholics.

Their Jewish consciousness is
very strong, however, and when
intermarriage takes place be-
tween' one of them and a Catholic
Indian, the non-Jewish partner is
usually converted to Judaism and
brought into the congregation.
