Chanukah on TV for 1st Time

The first. Chanukah program to
lie presented on television in De-
troit was seen last Thursday at
8 p.m. on WWJ-TV.
The program was sponsored by
the culture commission of the
Jewish Community Council un-
der the chairman ship of Rabbi
Morris Adler and Lawrence
Crohn.
Participating in the program
were the following:
The "Mastersingers," under the
direction of Charles Weiner, with
Betty Shanbrom at the piano;
Cantor Hyman J. Adler, who
chanted the benediction and lit
the first candle; and Rabbi Moses
Lehrman, who delivered the spe-
cial Chanukah message.
A scene, "Chanukah in the
Home," was enacted by Rose Sil-
verstein, Sidney Shevitz and
Risha Cohen. The script was writ-
ten by Julius Weinberg, director
of internal relations of the Coun-
cil.
A special Chanukah program,
featuring the Temple Israel Choir
was presented by the Council
last Sunday on WW1 The ad-
dress was delivered by Rabbi
Joshua Sperka.
Cantor Robert S. Tulman chant-
ed the Berochoth at the lighting
of the Chanukah candles, and the
Temple Israel Chair was under
the direction of Karl Haas.
Rube Weiss participated as
narrator.

UJC Dinner
to Mark 50th
Anniversary

In recognition of the 50th an-
niversary of the United Jewish
Charities, a dinner will be held
at 6:30 p.m., Jan. 4 at the Statler.
The group is now the property
holding corporation of the Jewish
Welfare Federation..

Judge Theodore Levin is presi-
dent of United Jewish Charities.
Other officers include Edith S.
Heavenrich, treasurer and Isidore
Sobeloff, secretary.
