AJC Emerges Victor in Fight Over Chaluziut

•

By PIIINEAS J. BIRON
THE AMERICAN JEWISH COMMITTEE scored an
important victory over the leadership of the Zion-
ist Organization and, for that matter, over the govern-
ment of Israel. It compelled the Israeli
.....
government and the president of the
ZOA to give up any and all inten-
tions to promote a Chalutzim move-
ment in the United States. The Blau-
stein-Proskauer board of strategy com-
pletely outplayed Tel Aviv and Daniel
Tria•), of the ZOA.
As a matter of fact, the AJC leaders
presented the advocates of ab Ameri-
can Chalutzim campaign with an ul-
timatum couched in suave but never-
theless firm terms. Biron
What the committee said in effect was this: "If you
gentlemen go on talking about American Jewish mass
immigration to Israel, we shall be compelled to side
with the Council of Judaism and charge American
Zionists with dual loyalty and you know what that
will du to the UJA. But if you accept our formula that
American Jews may have an abiding friendship for
the new State and a sincere desire as Americans to aid
In its development (and nothing more), then we shall
help you by denouncing publicly the Council cf Judaism
and reaffirming the loyalty of American Zionists."

And so what happened? Ben Gurion publicly re-
versed his position and stated that he had been mis-
quoted and that he had never issued a call for Ameri-
can Chalutzim. And Frisch issued a declaration which
defined American Zionism to the full satisfaction of Mr.
Proskauer.
In other words, Zionist ideology surrendered un-
conditionally to American Jewish Committee mentality.

W. W. WRITES: "Here's the lowdown on 'judge'
George W. Armstrong's 'philanthropy'. lie was willing
to 'give' away a potential 50 million smackers (to
teach hatred), which didn't belong to him. It was
five-eighths of the value of his oil lands—which happens
to be the exact amount Armstrong would've had to pay
Uncle Sam in taxes if he didn't make that grant."

CONSISTENT WINNER
Fania Kruger of Witchita Falls
has made a habit of winning
poetry contests. In 1947 she won
a poetry award issued by the
Poetry Society of America. This
year she was one of the winners
of the Harry Kovner Poetry con-
test on New Israel.
The caliber of books now being
written on Jewish subjects is
well illustrated by the fact that
'four Jewish books had been
chosen by the American Library
Association as among the 50 best
religious books of the year.
Among them are the "Book of
Books" by Rabbi Solomon Gold-
man, "Pilgrims in a New Land"
by Lee Friedman, "Hasidism" by
Martin Bober and "The Purim
Anthology" by Rabbi Philip
Goodman.

THE AMERICAN JEWISH CONGRESS has elected
Rabbi Irving Miller to succeed Rabbi Stephen S. Wise
as president. It is a great honor and a heavy responsi-
bility. Rabbi Miller is a comparatively young man, a
man of great ambition whose mind was made up years
ago to achieve the presidency of the Zionist Organiza-
tion of America.
Somehow, Rabbi Miller was sidetracked, although
he managed to perform the almost impossible acrobatic

stunt of supporting Rabbi Silver and Rabbi Wise at one
and the same time.
Not so many years ago Rabbi Miller was considered
a progressive. Today he no longer believes in radical-
ism, Stephen Wise considered him a clever politician,
too clever for consistent leadership. Yet who knows?
Perhaps now that he has achieved his ambition, Miller
may emerge a Jewish statesman since he no longer
needs to be a smart politician. We sincerely hope so,

, PROF. E. V. SITTER of the Michigan College
of Mining and' Technology is annoyed. The college
discharged him because it was proven that the pro-
fessor, although a native American, gave up his Ameri-
can citizenship, returned to Germany in 1939 and-
joined the Nazi 'party.
The professor is now reported. as saying: "I sacri-
ficed my American citizenship to do what I thought
was for the welfare of both Europe and America. I
wrote and broadcast commentaries on the struggle
between Soviet Russia and Germany to explain to the
English speaking world that which now needs' no ex-
planation."
In other words, the professor implies that every-
body agrees now that it would have been to the bene-
fit of Europe and America if Nazi Germany had won
the war. Well professor, you should have stayed a
Nazi citizen.
