Dr. Wise Gone, AJ Congress Deciding Its Role

By PIIINEAS J. IIIRON

THE NATIONAL BIENNIAL convention of the

American Jewish Congress is now in session in
New York City. It is the first convention without the
leadership of Stephen S. Wise. It will be a decisive
test of the organisational and ideological strength of
the Congress as an institution. The Congress was
merely a platform for Dr. Wise's Jewish statesman-
ship.
, Today however the Congress must demonstrate its
validity and raison d'etre as the
democratic instrument of American
Jewry! It cannot afford to be
merely another parasitic communal
etup competing with the American
ewish Committee and the Anti-
Defamation League for the atten-
tion and donations of American
Jews.
In this dynamic age, a Jewish
defense organization in America
must speak out with the fearless
voice of a young Stephen S. Wise,
Biron
a voice that refused to be silenced by timid appeasers
that challenged the self-appointed Jewish leadership
whenever interests were at stake.
Wise was never afraid of criticism. He was a radi-
cal who had contempt for lethargic respectability.

s

WHEN GERMAN JEWRY felt the first symptoms
of Hiller's ruthless anti-Semitism, Wise threw diplo-
matic language overboard and aroused the American
people to a full realization of the meaning of Nazism.

Today reliable, judicious reports from Germany re-
veal to us the ghastly undeniable fact that Nazism,
far from dead, is experiencing a renaissance, with the
help of politicians and military leaders from London
and Washington. The U.S. State Department is play-
ing unashamedly the role of midwife in the rebirth
of this monster, who murdered a third of the Jewish
people.

The big job of the American Jewish Congress is to
try to put an end to the renazification of Germany.
Even if the Congress should not prevail against the
foreign policy of England and America, it must con-
centrate its energies towards that attempt.
Wjse did not stop Hitlerism, nor did he save Ger-
man Jewry, but his prophetic voice was a warning to
all the peoples of the universe and contributed much
towards the unmasking of the regime which threat-
ened the freedom of the world. Will the American
Jewish Congress emerge as the authentic democratic
voice of American Jewry at, this convention? . . . We
sincerely hope so.

of Justice does not pay much attention to it, the Na-

pamphlets throughout America.
The guest of honor at this dinner was Cecil Palmer,
one of Britain's top Fascists.
Among the sponsors of the dinner were such "dis-
tinguished" public figures as Robert R. Watson of
the National Association of Manufacturers, the finan-

Albert W. Hawken, former U. S. Senator and one time
president of the U. S. Chamber of Commerce; Princess
Alexandra Kropotkin, John J. Raskob, multi-million-
aire industrialist; David M. Goodrich, rubber manu-
facturer: Ogden H. Hammond, ex-ambassador to
Franco-Spain; and numerous other celebrities and
members of high financial spheres of our democracy.
But our defense organizations still maintain that or-
ganized anti-Semitism is on the downgrade.
