east and west failed when Ike
Soviet Union refused to partici-
pate in negotiations, proposed by
Israel, to place the so-called Lit-
tle Assembly on a basis accepta-
ble to all. (Russia has boycotted
the Little Assembly, and Israel
had apparently hoped that with
changes in the structure of the
interim group. it might become
acceptable to the Soviet Union.)
Immediately following the So-
viet refusal to discuss the ques-
tion, the special political com-
mittee adopted the U. S. proposal
to extend the life of the Little
Assembly indefiniely. Jacob Rob-
hison, the Israeli representative
expressed regret that stronger
efforts at conciliation were not
made.
"Israel still considers unity the
greatest need of the UN," he de-
clared.

Pattern of Jewish Crisis

The continued flow of material
assistance from America has be-
come ''a vital factor" in the de-
velopment of the State of Israel,
Robert Capa, correspondent and
photographer, writes in "Israel
Reborn," which appears in the
Nov. 8 issue of Look magazine,
which went on sale at news
stands in Detroit on Tuesday.
Look devotes eight full pages
to this highly impressive picture
story of the new Israel.
The article points out that one
"he principal sources of reve-
nue on which the people of Israel
depend to ward off economic

anomaly that out of hundreds of
millions of dollars American
Jewry has raised for relief pur-
poses during the last years, only
one-fourth of one percent has
been allotted for local Jewish
cultural and religious needs in
this country. This week saw the
end of this perversion.
A number of other educational
institutions, such as Yeshiva Uni-
versity and others, have also
given notice of their intentions
to collect funds for their needs.
Thus, the week saw the beginning
of a trickle which will soon rise
into a river.

Look's special feature on Israel
is liberally illustrated with 22
Capa photographs including three
full-page pictures. The arrival
and resettlement of immigrants,
the building of new agricultural
settlements, the irrigation of the
Negev, the bustling life of Is-
rael's cities, cultural and religious
activities—all are vividly de-
scribed in word and picture.
Some of the photographs give
a striking impression of the di-
versified types of the new immi-
grants from North Africa and
Western Europe who are now
pouring into the country at a
record rate.

bad taste to appear in its October
issue on the Jewish east side.
The article entitled, "Adam and
Eve on Delancey Street," by Isaac
Rosenfeld, has aroused under-
standable resentment among the
finer Yiddish writers. A. Giant's,
the poet and critic of the "Tog,"
rightly saw in it cheap, contemp-
tuous presentation of the east
side Jews on the part of a snob-
bish, smart-alecky young mod-
ernist without taste.
He wrongly described the art-
icle as typical of the "assimila-
tionist Jews" attitude to the East
Side Jew, for "Commentary" has
on several occasions published
other articles on the same sub-
ject which were excellent. (Isa mosie3 ite Gets Fine

FILL UN VA('ANCIES
YUGOSLAVIA, India and Ecu-
ador have been elected to fill the
three places on the Security
Council which will become vac-
ant Dec. 31, when Canada, Ar-
gentine and the Soviet Ukraine
leave 'these positions.
The Israeli delegation voted for
Ecuador, India and, with the So-
viet Union, for Czechoslavakia.
In general, despite the heavy
Mosrem populations of India and
Yugoslavia, the attitude of the
Council • towards Israel will not
change. Ecuador supported par-
tition, and Yugoslavia is expected
to be less tinder U. S. influence
than Canada. Israeli delegates
said they were not disturbed by
the new makeup of the Security
Council.
