Cohen. . The very nature of their national and personal experience was such that, merely to remain human, they had to draw their strength from the Book. For the Jews reading the Book was not a casual luxury for an ephemeral hour; it was the very fountain- head of their salvation. By the Book of the Torah the Jews meant not only the Pentateuch of Moses, but also the rich treasury of literature of which the Pentateuch is the supreme symbol. Nor by the Torah did the Jews mean only the Book of the Law; neither Jews nor other human beings can live by law alone. The Torah and Jewish books through the ages satisfied deep and abid- ing human hungers in the Jewish heart. Because the Book gave the Jews a sustaining joy of living, they exalted the Book and dedicated to it a festival—Simchas Torah, the Joy of the Torah. Confusion on Dates Three major community events were scheduled for 8;30 p.m., Wednesday, and if you were interested in the different subjects discussed, all you had to do was cut yourself up in three pieces and send each piece to a different location. Or you could attend one, send your wife to a second and hire someone to report the third function for you. LoS, JEWRY I”9 1. Jewish Times/ I 1Frove AM SEATED AT my desk. A few minutes ago I was &ant- ing at my memo pad to see whet remains to be done before Rog Hashanah. One notation mow ell. circled. All it said was "ZOA mere check"—but I was able to understand my own hieiogl,_ phics. So I pulled out my checkbook and wrote a check to the order of the Philadelphia Zionist Or- ganization for $8 to Cover my ZOA membership dues fie this coming Jewish year, 5710. If I had a wife ,the check would have been for $12 to cover our joint membership in ZOA. She would probably want to be a member of both ZOA and Hadassah. Not having yet made my first million, I am not the sort of per. son who writes checks just for the fun of it. Moreover, I will not support any organization whose job is finished or whose ac- tivities are unnecessary and de. signed merely to keep it in ex- istence. It is self-evident that I do not consider the ZOA, Nadas_ sah er the other strong wins of American Zionism are anywhere near ready for the trash can. • • • LAKE SUCCESS—(WNS)—A cable expressing determination GOLDEN AGE DISTANT EVEN ASSUMING that the es- to fight the proposed internationalization of the Holy City was re- ceived by Aubrey Eban, chief of the Israeli delegation to the UN tablishment of the State of Is. council. rael ended the need for Zionist The cable voiced the graditude:ie, it was reported, was awaiting activity in that area, the second Of course, there was another alternative.
