Living Room
Bad Spot for
Yom Kippur

By MITCHELL TENDLER
RAINED on Yom Kippur.
A The sky was grey, sullen,
overcast, and aesthetically speak-
ing, depressing. It was the kind
of afternoon a single guy wishes
he were married and vice versa.
We mulled about the living
room during a respite from serv-
ices. Iry S. wound his 6 foot, 3
r
inch frame into
mother position
It the corner
chair in an en-
deavor to get
comfortable. It
,was impossible.
"Well, "he said,
"this rain really
washes our sins
a way, doesn't it
Ha ha." He was
Tendler
answered with a
disdainful silence.
Harry looked up from the Free
t'Press. "Last night in Shul," he
said, "my father told me to say
Selichos. So I said, 'Selichos.' He
didn't think it was funny."
Harry's father was right.

Who This Week?

•

SPRAWLED uncomfortably on
the couch, Milt opened one eye.
"Isn't it time you went upstairs
and wrote a column on Rogovin?"
he said. "Or is Sid Gordon the
lucky athlete of the week?"
They tittered in unison.
For my money, Harry's father
was right about the whole bunch
of them. "All right, wise guys,"
we said, "if you think it's such a
snap, what would you suggest the
column be devoted to this week?"
"Why not a follow-up on Gus-
sie Moran?" Iry G. chortled from
the straight-backed chair near the
door. The rest chuckled appre-
ciatively.
Harry's father is a very learned
man, as far as we're concerned.

How About Tonight?

"ANY YOU MEN going to
Florida this Christmas?" Milt
asked.
Iry S. answered. "What about
tonight, much less December."
"A ver-r-ry pregnant question,"
Iry G. added.
"You guys are disgusting, talk-
ing about women on Yom Kip-
Saur," Harry said. "Say Selichos,
Milt."
"Selichos," Milt said.
Iry S. was not defeated. "What
do you say we go to the Yom
Kippur Night dance?" he said.
"And what do you propose us-
ing for a date?" Harry said, "be-
ing as my mother is busy tonight."
"A ver-r-ry pregnant question,"
Iry G. said.

Cancel It

"AS A MATTER of fact," we
said, "why not run a recap on
Sid Lockman and "Biggie" Gold-
berg for the 1948 season?"
'You do that, and you can can-
cel my subscription," Milt said.
"I saw a gorgeous blonde at
Webster Hall the other day," Iry
S. said. "Her name was Thelma
or Theresa or something."
"By, you they're all gorgeous,"
Milt said, "and you know where
yob': taste is."
"A ver-r-ry sage observation,
Milton," Iry G. said.
'I could write a prediction on
who I think will sign Hal Saltz-
man," we ventured.

iime for Shill

"WHOM," Harry said. "And
whom gives a fiddler's whatcha-
macallit whom signs Hal Saltz-
man."
- For being an intelligent man,
Harry's father certainly misfired
where his son was concerned.
"It's time to go back to Shul,"
Iry S, said. "It won't be long
now."
