Some ten or so families belong
to what one might call the lower
aristocracy, i.e. the circle from
which hereditarily senior civil
servants are recruited.
A Falashas is director of posts
and customs and another member
of the same family, Professor
Taniath, a writer and scholar
known far beyond the confines
of Abyssinia, is one of the Negros'
most trusted advisers.
Although the Falashas offer
prayers for the "rebirth"of Jer-
usalem, they have shown little
desire personally to participate
in this rebirth.
There are a number of excep-
tions. , of course, and the records
of the Israeli defence army bear
eloquent testimony as to the
bravery of a number of Israeli
soldiers who were formerly mem-
bers of the Falasha community in
Abyssinia and who cherish in
their hearts memories of a glori-
ous past.
