By CORA MILLER
TEL AVIV—The miracle of the

Palestine war was that while

Israel fought off the formidable

enemy with one hand, with the
other she continued to build.
Colonies sprang up overnight.,
Settlers streamed to the land.
Buildings rose in the cities. Israel!
worked as hard at building the •
peace as at routing the invaders.
Above all, the little country at
war strained every effort to es-
tablish more and more colonies on
the land—for her colonies, dotting
the countryside like beacons of
hope and faith. spell assurance of
survival for the infant State.

•Of the many young colonies in
Israel, one that is outstanding is
Kraf Bnai Zion, the General
Zionist middle class agricultural
settlement established near
nana in March, 1947 by Bnai Zion.'

In the brief period since the
founding of their settlement, the
colonists have repaid about half
of the loans from the Jewish
Agency and the General Zionist
constructive enterprises fund for
the erection of their homes. Each
house cost LI. 750 ($3,000) to
build; the cost for similar houses
has now risen to LI. 900 ($3,600).

CHART TRANSPORT

SITUATED THREE kilometers
from the Haifa-Tel Aviv super-
highway, the colonists of Kfar
Bnai Zion have experienced some
difficulty, up to now, in sending
PRIVATE ENTERPRISE
their crops to market. On his
ALTHOUGH WORK in the recent visit there, however, Dr.
settlement is performed coopera-
tively and the produce is market-
ed cooperatively, the proceeds re-
vert to the individual colonists.
Due to the industriousness of
the settlers, the Kfar now yields
an average gross income of LI.
1,000 ($4,000) per week from ro-
tating crops of vegetables raised
the year round.
Recently they have also be-
gun to experiment with horti-
culture. Each house now has its
little garden of exotic plants that
bloom so luxuriously in the Mid-•
(Ile East climate. Aside from the
pleasure thus derived by the gar-
deners and the beauty enjoyed by
the entire colony, these flowers
show promise of becoming a fur-
ther source of income.
In addition to the 30 little cot-
tages which house the original
families, the colonists have also
built 30 "housing units" of one
room each. These are occupied
by families of immigrants who
conic to Kfar Bnai Zion for a
short time to undergo their Bach-
