Israel to Draft
Men, Women

TEL AVIV—(WNS)—Compul-
sory military service for both
men and women was provided
for in a bill passed by the Israel
parliament.
Explaining the provision for
military service for women as
well as for men, Premier Ben
Gurion said that the majority of
the Yishuv support the doctrine
of "equal rights and obligations
for women."
NEED ONE LANGUAGE
Israel's soldiers, Ben Gurion
said, are natives of 55 different
countries, and speak as many dif-
ferent tongues. To achieve full
nationhood, he added, it was nec-
essary that the common tongue
of Hebrew be acquired by all.
The premier challenged the re-
marks of some of the members of
the parliament that a majority
of the officers in the army are
members of the Mapam, while
only a third are Mapai members.
He said he would not permit
politics to be introduced into the
army.
The premier also took occa-
sion to protest against the gen-
eral political factionalism in Is-
rael. He declared that the exist-
ence of the present 22 parties in
Israel was "shameful."
2 YEARS FOR MEN
The conscription measure pro-
vides for a maximum service of
two years for men and one year
for women.
Opposition to the new con-
scription law which provides for
the mobilization of women as
well as men in the Israel army
was expressed by speakers at a
conference of the women's divi-
sion of the Mizrachi Labor Party.
They contended that conscript-
ing women is "harmful to wo-
men's psychology and morale"
and would create disturbances in
family life.

African Jews had better stop.
This was urged here by Dr. S.
Levenberg, head of the Jewish
Agency Information office.
There have been many stories
circulated about the primitive
status of these African immi-
grants to Israel, of their unfa-
miliarity with the amenities of
civilized life and their unwilling-
ness to adapt themselves to more
advanced cultural patterns.
Dr. Levenberg says that much
of this talk is exaggeration and
that the facts really are that the

Sadistic Slaughter of Jews
Is Laid to Van Mannstein

HAMBURG — (WNS) —Charg-
ing that former Field Marshal
General Fredrich von Mann-
stein was a ruthless criminal
who had used Soviet war prison-
ers to clear mine fields, Sir Ar-
thur Comyns-Carr, British chief
prosecutor at the trial, blamed
von Mannstein for the slaughter
of 10,000 Jews in Simferopol,
Crimea.
Von Mannstein, 61, was corn-
niander of the German 11th army
army during the war.
ARMY GETS WATCHES
After the Jews were murder-
ed, said the prosecutor, "a dis-
pute arose between the German
military chief of staff and the
Gestapo about the disposition of
the watches taken from the un-
fortunate victims" and Mannstein
himself settled the dispute in fa-
vor of the army.
The. mass-drowning of Jews
who tried to cross the San River
into Russian-occupied Poland
ahead of invading Nazi armies
and who were machine-gunned
by the Gestapo during the
crossing was also laid to an order
issued by von Mannstein.
RIVER BLOOD-RED
Describing the mass-drowning,
the prosecutor told the court:
The Gestapo stood on the bank
of the river and drove the Jews
into boats. Many did not get on
board and were carried away by
the current. Women in the water
held their children above their
heads to prevent them from
