hundred Jews from Moslem lands
have applied to the French con-
sulate in Tel Aviv for permission
to return to their homes after
months in relocation camps.
The main reason for their dis-
satisfaction apart from the crowd-
ed camp conditions and the te-
dium of the reception stages is
that the North African group of
immigrants is the least assimilat-
ed and represents the greatest
problem to the Israeli govern-
ment.
In fact, Hebrew newspapers
have often commented editorially
about the possible danger of the
North African immigration to Is-
rael. They are the least adapta-
ble. the newspapers claim, to the
modern type of civilization which
the Israeli government is plan-
ning.
In effect the North African
Jews have created a minority
problem in a country conceived
of as a haven for a minority race.
"In appearance, language, cus-
toms, they are alien to Israel,"
wrote one American correspon-
dent commenting on this return
exodus to Tunisia, Morocco and
other North African countries.
