Ben . Gurion
On Spot As U.S. Applies
Squeeze'
`
By PlUNEAS J. BIRON
THE
BEN GURION Government is on the spot. Much
of its prestige is based on the political and financial
help it has received and expects to get from the United
States, But now, President Truman and the American
state department are applying terrific pressure on the
Israeli Government.
Washington and London are using the Arab refugee
issue ruthlessly to gain territorial concessions from the
tiny Jewish State. Tel Aviv is indeed
in a tough situation. It is staggered
by economic problems. It knows that
the next five years will confront Is-
rael with one economic crisis after
another. The main reason for these
financial difficulties is the gigantic
influx of immigration, consisting of
human material that cannot be made
immediately productive. In any case
a large percentage of these immi-
grants will have to be supported for
some time.
Our own state department and
Biron
Downing street are well aware of these .conditions.
Washington, insists, therefore on immediate action. If
Ben Gurion surrenders parts of the Negev and of Gali-
lee and accepts the internationization of Jerusalem he
will lose public support, perhaps so much as to neces-
sitate his resignation. It on the other hand he does not
satisfy Washington, he endangers the present economic
situation of his country. Certain American Zionist
leaders believe that the only solution is to make a
deal with Washington along Truman's Marshall plan,
even if such a deal would mean alienating the Soviet
Union.
The Mapam, United Workers' Party, maintains that
the problems of peace, Jerusalem, Arab refugees etc.,
ar;.• not issues between Israel and the United States but
between Israel and the United Nations. And so the
political kettle is boiling and the next few months
might be decisive for the future of the Jewish State.

IT IS TRUE that Sid Gordon, the Jewish baseball
star of the New York Giants, is getting fed up with
the anti-Semitic heckling by certain players on the
St. Louis team ... Allen Lesser's article on the Jewish
Telegraphic Agency in the spring issue of the Menorah
Journal (just out) is a sizzling expose.that will have
to be answered by George Backer, president of the
JTA sooner or later .. . Thomas Mann, the Nobel
Prize author, has given permission for the filming of
his novel "Joseph" to an Israeli movie producer • . .
And our own Anti-Defamation League has entered
the film business with the picture "Prejudice," said to
be a ccrker. The ADL financed the venture together
with the Protestant Film Commission. It is a full
length feature. •
We were the first to tell you about David Lax, the
young American Jewish painter whose anti-war exhi-
bition "Denunciation" will open a few days bilore
Armistice Day in New York. Now we hear that the
UN may acquire the Lax collection for its Assembly
Hall, now being built in New York . . . Sholem Ascii
announced his resignation from the YIKUF cultural
organization. No matter what reasons Asch gave for
his action the ttuth is that Asch is afraid that he may
lose Catholic support for his forthcoming novel "Mary,
The Mother," if he can be attacked as a t umber of a
Yiddish left wing organization.

JOSEPH BULOFF, the gifted Yiddish actor who is
also noted for his success un the American stage and
screen, was never money-hungry. Frequently he turns
his back on lucrative Broadway and Hollywood con-
tracts if the roles offered are not to his liking. A few
months ago he went to sue Arthur Miller's "Death of
a Salesman" in which Lee Cobb is the star. He fell
in love with Cobb's role, but being known as a come-
dian he could not convince the producers that he
would be a good choice for one of the road companies.
But Buloff could not sleep. He wanted to play the
salesman. So he bought the Yiddish, rights to Miller's
Broadway hit and is now playing it in Yiddish on a
Latin-American tour, Buloff's success in it has been so
overwhelming that - the Broadway producers are trying
to obtain him for a second American company.
