two years' duration for the entire
Israeli population modeled along
Switzerland's mobilization . chemc'
was revealed here by David Zvi
Pinkas, deputy speaker of the
Knesset. Israeli parliament, and
World Mizrachi leader.
Pinkas told newspapermen that
"in order to be prepared for any
future acts of aggression, Israel
must mobilize its entire popula-
tion—men, women and youths,"
2 YEARS FOR ALL
Asserting that "Israel cannot
afford to keep its entire popula-
tion under arms," Pinkas dis-
closed his country's mobilization
plan which calls for two years
of service for every male youth
between 18 and 20 years of age.
,One year will be spent in mili-
tary training and the second in
general training for land-devel-
opment and public utilities serv-
ice, he said. Girls of the same
age level, he added, will be re-
cruited for one year training in
auxiliary military services. The
entire population, from 20 to 50
years of age, will thereafter be
Balled up every year for several
days' review of their training. In

will be able to assemble its en-

Youth battalions. with mem-
bership from 14 to 18 years, will
also be organized, lit' disclosed.
RESPECT TRADITIONS
Youths will be trained M mili-
tary cslisthenics, in hiking and
camping. He said the Israeli gov-
ernment has assured that relig-
ious youths will be enabled to
observe Kashruth and Sabbath
throughout their entire course of
trainin g.
Reporting on Israel's economic
problem, Pinkas, who is also
chairman of the Knesset finance
and budget committee, said that
Israel will need 200 million dol-
lars in capital investments during
the year April 1949-1950 to carry
out its peacetime program. .
This budget, he staled, will
provide for housing. irrigation

communications, and airfields.
He said that 50 millions will be
raised on internal loans, the re-
mainder coming from interna-
tional bank loans and contibu-

Pinkas told newsmen he had

This is the crux of the matter:
Is American Zionism to be what
it was at its foundation and for

Is American Zionism, after it
has lost its political function, to
embark upon a new propaganda
task of .preparing the minds of
American Jews that they, too, like
the German and other European
Jews, are in the country of their
birth only on a temporary stay
and that eventually they, too,
will have to move to Israel?
It is good to see that the Zion-
ist movement is divided on this
question. New York Zionists seem
to be for an all-out nationalism.
Elsewhere, Zionists are for the
old-fashioned American Zionism.
The issue is clarified, and the de-
cision is not far off.
